Seamen should be in the list based on the last 20 years. Just maybe not that high.

I would say the great Dane but there's obviously a case for Buffon.

    Chilavert? Madness.

Agree with Jaime, I wasn't that impressed with Zenga either. My top 5:

    1. Buffon, then Chilavert, Kahn, Oscar Córdoba, Schmeichel.

Buffon is simply the best goalie of his generation. Back in the late 90's when Schmeichel was regarded as the best goalie (he was just playing with the most exposed club around the world!) I told some friends to watch Chilavert and Schmeichel in World Cup 1998. They were huge fans of the Dane. After that France '98 World Cup, they had realized Chilavert was the better goalie. All I said was, "watch and compare the two goalies". Schmeichel was a good goalie, but he benefited from playing in the most exposed club much like Eric Cantona, and "king" Eric couldn't crack a starting 11 for France.

Chilavert won EVERYTHING at club level with Vélez, and he was very instrumental in achieving that when winning Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup...with Vélez. That's like Schmeichel winning it all playing for a club like Newcastle. Chilavert marshalled his troops heroically in '98 losing to France the eventual winners. Who did Schmeichel wimped out against in '98?

Kahn was also better than Schmeichel. The Colombian Oscar Córdoba was a monster during his peak at Boca Juniors. He also won everything at club level. So there you have it, don't get me wrong, Schmeichel was a very good goalie, but he was made out to be more than he really was, just like Eric Cantona. <Ale>

Very soon, Casillas will be topping his list much like Buffon. <Ale>

This list is completely based on the prizes they won, has nothing to do with the ability of the keeper.

It should read : list of keepers who were in the right team at the right time (will often be the best goalies....but a surprising number of times not at all) Ale

Of course Parky, like I said earlier, Schmeichel was no scrub. He's definitely one of the best of his generation, he's "my" #5 goalie. <Ale>

Your man Van der Sar will be pushing Casillas in the next list for sure. I've seen how he has improved through the years. For instance, in the past he couldn't save a penalty kick, and now look at him, he's like Fillol, remember him! <Ale>

Zenga benefitted from playing behind Bergomi-Ferri-Baresi-Maldini (what a defence!). I thought Pagliuca was the much better goalkeeper. Even Sebastiano Rossi, another contemporary, was much less prone to stupid mistakes. Stefano Tacconi was also great...really had a great crop of goalkeepers in the late 80s and early 90s, Italy had. I guess they always do.

I was always a big fun of Pagliuca i am surprised he is often not mentioned when talking about great keepers.
Preud d'homme, Dasaev and Baía so low... Evil or Very Mad

    PS:
And i agree completly with Axe, i would add another thing though:keepers with a big media hype from playing for big clubs /countries. Most are good of course but not all deserve to be there or even with such a good rating.

Possibly true but not the best keeper of the last 20 years... past his best from the early 90s.

He was IMO much better than Seaman ever became, during the mid - late 80's he was so agile and nimble.

In saying this though another good shout might be Neville Southall, he was phenomenal for a 'big bloke' so quick and agile too.

To be honest i've never seen what all the fuss was about surround Buffon, but then i don't watch him week in week out, but hes never 'wowed' me like either Big Nev or Shilton did.

it's hard to choose between Bosnich and Spink. Spink has a chance, he won far more European Cups than Buffon, for example, but i'll think the Aussie gets it just for being so good for Villa and so bad for everyone else. Grobbelaar 3rd ok

Shocked Thats like saying that Maldini has never wowed you like Wayne Bridge did!

If you only care for brilliant saves, then Dida is probably better than Buffon and Cech... I am sure that a compilation of his top 5 saves would beat Buffon's.... but if you look at consistancy or brilliance over a period or the top 1000 saves for example, then you will realise what a legend Buffon is.

I used to keep, always admired great keepers, and there have been many in the last 25 years since I have been watching football... but Buffon is something else, he is almost superhuman... Buffon is to keeping what Maldini is to left back's and Maradona is to playmakers.... simply unbelievable!
