Petrov signs for Villa £6.5m

Post by Sgoater1 on Wed Aug 30, 2006 12:57 pm

The deal is for £6.5m but could be worth £8m. A lot of teams have been trying ot sign Petrov and this is a lot of money. I guess O'Neill has managed him before an knows how good he is. Villa have started well and with the signing of Petrov and possible signing of a striker (Saviola and Defoe being linked) things are looking goood for Villa.

He is a good player from what I have seen of him in the SPL and when Celtic play in Europe. I think they may have slightly overpaid for him though.

Villa will now face the problem like the rest of the other larger sides, clubs know they have significant finance so they can increase the fee for a player.

I can't see Saviola fitting in at Villa either.

Didn't Saviola have quite a good partnership with Angel at Riverplate?

They were, but that was around 6 years ago. Aimar was also in that River Plate team.

I cant remember tbh, but i could see them working well together. Plus with Baros they would have a nice mixture of strikers.

Just watching all these tranfers coming in and its clear to see the prem is becoming even more competative as a league, the likes of Bolton, Villa, Pompey, all splashing the cash meaning its hard enough just finishing in the top 10 let alone top 6.

Saints come up with a very good 4-3-3 formation yesterday.

With Davis, Petrov and MaCann in midfield.

Hi

Petrov is, I think, a moderately good player, who’ll hopefully flourish under O’Neill at Villa. He passes adequately, gets forward at opportune moments in the match, defends satisfactorily, often covers the width of midfield, can finish from outside the area, has good stamina; and so forth.

Nevertheless, I always expected more from him, especially in big European games. Valuating players is a tricky endeavour, but I think, in this case, £6.5 Million is too rich a price to pay for him.

you all seem to forget one v big thing o´neill favoured formation is 5-3-2/3-5-2 however you want to look at it so a CM of McCann, Davis & McCann is sensible with Barry at LWB

Would make even more sense if they have Agathe. He can play RWB.

------------------- Sorensen

------- Hughes --- Mellberg --- Ridgewell

Agathe ----------------------------------- Barry

---------- Petrov --- McCann --- Davis

--------------- Angel ------ Baros

or indeed whittingham as lwb, and barry in centre mid, where he's done well so far this season. bouma is also an option for cb, when he's fit. and cahill.

hell, patrick berger and martin laursen might get fit too. we'll have quite a big squad then.

baros was supposed to be going away with czechs for this weekend so should be back after that

I do like Whittingham, he has impressed me for the under 21s. I hope he gets more games.

Good, solid player. but still can't understand how you guys (and this one is not English!) pay so much for anyone who just comes from SPL or EPL.

If he played for Portuguese League (much better than Scotish one), he would be worth maximum 5 million EUR.

haha

I was just going with Franks 3-5-2.

Not sure how he and Moore would fit into that, unless one of Baros or Angel are dropped.

Either, they certainly have options with Agathe, Petrov and maybe another striker.

As long as Davis plays. ok

I like that 4-3-3 a lot.

My only worry is Moore - would he offer enough width?

So here's a heartwarming story for you cynics. Over four years after being forced to stop playing due to undergoing chemotherapy for leukaemia, Petrov is training again with Villa and played in a friendly yesterday. There's a chance he may get a contract for next season Ale
