Heskey

Post by The Easter Bunny on Sat Aug 16, 2008 9:22 pm

To be recalled cheers does this mean we will see the Owen-Heskey Partnership re-untied?

Team:
England squad to face Czech Republic on Wednesday at Wembley Stadium:

Goalkeepers: David James (Portsmouth), Paul Robinson (Blackburn Rovers), Joe Hart (Manchester City)

Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham United), Jonathan Woodgate (Tottenham Hotspur)

Midfielders: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), David Bentley (Tottenham Hotspur), Frank Lampard (Chelsea),David Beckham (LA Galaxy), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough)

Forwards: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Jermain Defoe(Portsmouth), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Emile Heskey (Wigan Athletic)

Article:
Spoiler:
Wigan striker Emile Heskey has been recalled to the England squad by coach Fabio Capello but Peter Crouch misses out for the Czech Republic friendly.

Heskey has scored five goals in 45 appearances for England and last played for the international team in September 2007 in the 3-0 win over Russia.

Crouch, who moved to Portsmouth from Liverpool for 11m in the summer, is a surprise omission for Wednesday's game.

And Aston Villa forward Ashley Young will also be disappointed to miss out.

Capello was at Upton Park on Saturday watching West Ham beat Wigan 2-1 thanks to two goals from striker Dean Ashton.

Ashton, who broke his leg two years ago after being handed an England call-up by former coach Steve McClaren, has been ruled out after coming off against Wigan with a calf problem.

However, with 13 players in action in Sunday's three Premier League games, there has to be a chance the Italian will suffer some withdrawals.

Goalkeeper Paul Robinson is another player to return to the international fold, with central defenders Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate also included.

As expected, David Beckham will make the trip from Los Angeles before flying on to Beijing to take part in the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games as London takes centre stage as the next host.

Beckham is one of four captains Capello has used in his four friendlies in charge but the final choice of the man who will lead England into their World Cup qualifiers is thought to be between John Terry and Rio Ferdinand.

The decision is due to be announced on Tuesday, with Ferdinand just favoured to edge it.

No Ashley Young. Foolish. At least Rai will be happy Carrick's back.

Hard time to pick squad anyway, with season only just underway. You don't really know who's in form. Friendlies aren't a great guide.

Heskey + Rooney please.

Has to be tried and it should cause nearly any defence a nightmare.

Might as well. Heskey a blunt tool, but an effective one. And he was good when he was brought back by McLaren. Although I kinda think he'd be better alongside someone who can finish...neither Rooney nor he are particularly composed.

Still, not too confidence-inspiring for the long-term future that we got Robinson, Beckham and Heskey in there.

Is Hargreaves injured or dropped?

Injured.

Rooney + Heskey is not ideal but I'd certainly that over Heskey + Defoe or Rooney + Defoe.

If Crouch was still at Liverpool, he'd be in the squad.

I hope Gerrard signs for Portsmouth next season. Whistle

Heskey could do very well. He's never been a lethal striker but in terms of leading the line he's got all the right attributes. Would mean Rooney could go back to his favoured position as a split striker, though this would once again entail the problem of him and Gerrard/Lampard/Joe Cole all essentially playing in the same position.

I don't understand why every England manager seems incapable of realizing that only one of Gerrard/Lampard should start, and the other should be the first player you sub in unless theres an injury.

Jenas called up in place of Carrick.

Players I don't understand being called up.

Wayne Bridge , when did he last play a game?

Jermaine Jenas, whilst for a spell in January he looked a class player he is back to his anonymous displays.

Emile Heskey, if Owen isn't playing then is there really any point.

Theo Walcott, why?

Players I don't understand not being called up.

Would have like to have seen Warnock maybe Shorey. At least a leftback who plays.

Ashley Young, fantastic player.

Peter Crouch Englands best player

Maybe his style isnt to Capello's liking or he wont have room for him in the way he plays who knows. Doubt he picks players purely on how well they're playing

Pace, great mentality and guaranteed end product.

If John Terry or Fat Frank were left out the press would go nuts !

Its mental that he's not included to be honest..he must wonder what he has to do.

Carrick bottles it again Ale

Think Agbonlahor would've been worth a shot in this game aswell.

It's a shame Chevanton played those half-a-dozen games for Uruguay 5 years ago because he would've solved all our striker problems in an instant.

It is crazy, but from a Villa perspective not too upsetting, as it minimises risk of injury and keeps him lower profile, which will help keep the top 4 ignorant a while longer. Why Benitez wants to spend 18m on Barry, when Young would be perfect for them is bizarre. Maybe (hopefully) we quoted them double the price..
