Most useless player of the 21st century

Post by SuperMario on Fri Dec 12, 2008 7:45 pm

Which player has played the least matches while being fit. I'm talking about (luxury) fringe players, who are fully match fit, but hardly make the bench if at all, let alone play. Transfers are allowed as long as they get little or no playing time.

    Who wins the Bogarde Award?

Diao is a good call for starters he only played 12 matches a season on average throughout his carreer. Was hardly used anywhere he went.

Have a feeling there must be far useless players. Can't think of one at Feyenoord we prefer useless players in our starting line-up.

For Manchester United I will nominate

    Dong Fangzhou - £1m - £3.5 m

According to Wikipedia Dong made 1 senior appearance for united in four years (which I presume means league and CL) before being sent back to China

Bought purely as a marketing tool, Fergie replaced him with his attempts to conquer the African market .... Mateus Alberto Contreiras Gonçalves

I suppose backup goalkeepers are a different category but Dudek has made 1 league appearance in a year and a half.

Javier Balboa was given a shirt number with the first team in two seasons and he made only 6 appearances.

Carlos Diogo ended up being fairly useless...was bought in 05-06 the same season we bought two other right backs (Sergio Ramos and Cicinho) in addition to Michel Salgado (yes, your arithmetic is correct - that made FOUR right backs). Not sure how many appearances he made but it wasn't that many...then he went on loan and then he was sold outright. Decent player though.

Partice Luzi, was the keeper I've been thinking about cheers

Patrice Luzi Bernardi (born July 8, 1980) is a French goalkeeper currently with French side Stade Rennais. He is perhaps best known for his stint at Liverpool, which came to an end when he was released by the Anfield club in June 2005. He then signed a contract with Belgian side Mouscron. In 2006, he moved from Mouscron to another Belgian club, Charleroi.

Having previously played for Monaco and Ajaccio, Luzi made his Liverpool debut in January 2004 against Chelsea in a 1-0 win. He made two wonderful saves to deny Chelsea, but was left frustrated when he later was left out from the first team. His chances where limited when Liverpool loaned in Southampton's Paul Jones to cover from Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland. Patrice Luzi has been described as a good shot stopper with good handling and distribution.

he started 1 game, the league cup defeat to Coventry, they lost 2-0. I think he came on as a 90th minute sub in a couple of meaningless end of season games.

Fergle ruined his career to make a quick buck. I wonder how all those Chinese fans felt spending a weeks wages on a shirt with Dong's name on it only to find out they'd been conned.

For West Ham, I nominate Nigel Quashie...

    Signed-January 2007. Appearances to date-7.
    Cost-£1.5m.

Nigel Quashie did not make a single appearance in the 2007/08 season for West Ham, and has failed to do so at all in the 2008/09 season...making just one appearance in a comeback reserve/friendly game against QPR. He is now on loan at Birmingham City.

How about Ajax buying a Brazilian world champion who almost never played for them ? (Marcio Santos ? I'll have to google him)

Or that awesome Argentine striker Van Gaal bought for them for a lot of money (having only seen him on video) : "now we have a striker who'll fall down, that's how strong he is !" (Ivan Gabrich)

Nobody cared about him being strong : he couldn't score if his life depended on it Laugh

The last Eredivise player that comes to mind is Vampeta for PSV : they went to Brazil to specifically buy Vampeta (for quite a lot of money), but when they had him it turned out there were two Vampetas.....and they bought the wrong one !!! lol!

Van Der Meyde? Not sure if he's been injured, shit or both. He got 10 mins vs Villa last week, due to numerous first team players being injured.

VDM is an excellent call ok

He was never more than a decent player to begin with, but what he's shown for Everton is below every standard Grr

I think Routledge is a good player...he just hasn't got a chance wherever he has gone, bar Fulham...who should've kept him. I'd happily take him over Faubert. Who for £6.1m is in big danger of making this list.

Well, Routledge may've had potential once, but I think his confidence has been shot from the last couple of years. He's never gotten close to starting for Villa since signing, and at times we were hardly strong in depth.

Maduro for Valencia. He might be okay in end, but one year at €24m for a reserve that we don't want is a terrible signing. Not seen enough to know how bad he is.
