RIP Jarque

Post by Hem fet un.. on Sat Aug 08, 2009 8:59 pm

The Espanyol defender Daniel Jarque just died of a heart attack while talking to his girlfriend on the phone.

RIP

Despite being no fan of the Perikos my thoughts are with the family, fans and fellow players...

He was only 26. Outrageous that he could die of a heart attack at that age without club doctors knowing something was wrong and warning him. Football needs to sort this out. Surely a club like that can afford to ensure that medicals are fit for purpose.

Dove

Nearly joined us this time last year - you have to wonder if he was doing anything "strenuous" whilst on the phone to her?

Might've been an accident like David Carredine.

Really shocking. Like everyone has said, it's the way it happened that's most worrying - on the phone to his girlfriend (who was 7-8 months pregnant), and by the time she could call his teammates and they came in to check on him, he was already dead No

Rose

I understand the calls for greater vigilance from club doctors but arrhythmia (if that's what it was) is pretty much impossible to detect beforehand unless Jarque'd had the symptoms and had told the doctors about it. A family friend (daughter of a friend of my father) also died from it aged 26 while in apparent perfect health.

Talking of which, does de la Red have the same thing?

Part of the problem with De la Red is that the doctors don't seem to have a clue about what he has. The exact cause of his collapse a year ago is yet to be determined. It's heart-related of course, but specifics have not really been given. The last I heard was that preliminary genetic tests failed to clear him to play, so more tests are being conducted.

I actually think that 5 years ago De la Red would have been cleared to play, but Puerta's death has the Madrid doctors scared as hell to give De la Red the clearance to play.

How long did it take for the doctors to get to him? You always hear about 50 year old guys having heart attacks and surviving as long as they get to a hospital within a hour. Yet with these young athletes they all seem to die even if they instantly get treatment.

Puerta died a couple of days after he actually had the heart attack I think.

In Jarque's case, I only read the stuff from English reports but he was on the 'phone to his girlfriend when he 'became unable to speak' or somesuch. The girlfriend then rang his teammate Corominas and asked him to go and check on him and when Corominas went and knocked on his door he didn't get an answer, so he had to get someone from the hotel to open the door - (though there's another version in which the door is kicked open by Espanoyl players)...whatever, but it looks as if they didn't manage to get to him straightaway.

@Torrente - you can have these episodes without them being life threatening. My dad has slight arrythmia and blacks out a couple of times a year but he's fundamentally fine - the problem is more about him injuring himself when this happens.
