It is sad some people make fun of such a death.

It's always funny however when Lrd takes the moral highground

Don't know who this guy was but it is pathetic to throw your life away like this, especially considering the life he had the potential to lead.

Come on now COTR, you may be factually correct... however mental illness does not follow logic and that is the particularly sad effect, it is clear he was unable to see the positives in his life because he was consumed by the negatives, that is depression in a nutshell.

Saying things which in effect mean 'snap out of it' simply doesn't work.

Imagine being in a state of mind so incredibly bereft of positivity day in day out, its no surprise to some death is the more appealing option.

I have suffered from depression myself and I know there is no snapping out of it. People who haven't experienced that kind of emptiness and feel like joking about or judging the person would be well-advised to remain quiet.

Heard about this on the radio when I came in tonight. As I don't follow the Bundesliga I don't know anything about him but a terrible human tragedy. RIP. Rose

Really shocking Sad

I still vividly remember several years ago, seeing the "Breaking news" ticker on Eurosport, saying that Barcelona had signed Robert Enke, and thinking, "Who?". Later when I learned he was highly rated, I was quite optimistic that we had made a good signing for the future. But he never really settled, and in hindsight it's clear he probably moved when he was too young, at a time of turmoil for Bara.

Was very happy that he had managed to resurrect his career and seemingly looked to have got his family life back to normal. But clearly all was not well.

I never knew much about him, this article (in Dutch) does paint a picture of a special person (title : Enke, more than Hannover's number 1) :

http://www.vi.nl/Achtergronden/Speler-van-de-dag/172368/Enke-was-meer-dan-de-nummer-1-van-Hannover.htm

It's sad when someone sees no other way out of his misery than suicide. I refuse to judge him for that, I just hope he's found the peace he's been looking for.

So true. And a nice man also. Once, leaving the stadium, I was standing in front of his car, and he told me to get out the fucking way. It's those moments that make a football fans life.

That was... quite something. Bierhoff in a new light... summed it up. "Those of you whose job it is to comment on whether or not we've made the right decision, well, all I can say to you is you weren't there with us when we were discussing it, and the way I feel now is how the players feel too". Not surprising he struggled to get through that.

Extraordinary his wife at the press conference too seeking to explain how he could have been driven so far... in the end he managed to keep his depression a secret and finally its true extent a secret even from his wife and doctor.

About five contributions a second in the condolence book. A horrible time, and no way anything but a cancellation of Saturday's game was an option.

It's barely been 24 hours since the news broke, what do you think?

I didn't expect much from this message board, but you still manage to surprise me with some of the comments. To quote a German comedian: "If you don't know anything about a subject or don't have anything to say, shut the fuck up."
