What this means is a group of wealthy individuals and financial institutions got together to set a company. This company has, until now, given to Benfica €30million, to buy percentages of players.
In this moment, they have bought percentages between 20% and 50%, of seventeen players.
For example, they gave to Benfica €4million to have 20% of David Luiz. If/when we sell him, we have to give 20% of the fee to them. Sounds good business doesn't it?
But, there is one down side. If someone bid €20million or more for David Luiz, we have two choices, or we must except the bid, or we must pay immediately 20% of the value of the bid to the company.
This could provide a big problem for us after the world cup, when we could, if our players do well, receive bids for two or three. And we would struggle to buy back the percentages, meaning that we could be forced to sell.
All said and done, it's a very good exercise for us, and the unique way we had of being able to keep our good players and sign others like Ramires and Javi Garcia. Which, as Porto gets good prize money from the champions league every year, and we get almost nothing, we desperately needed to be able to compete equally with them.
