    Official World Cup Squad Lists

Post by Cesc Soler on Mon May 10, 2010 1:11 pm

With preliminary squads already or about to be announced before being cut to 23 by the 1st of June, this thread is to keep track of those who have made it or been left at home in one place.

Here is Del Bosque's preliminary 30 man list:

Porteros: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), José Manuel Reina (Liverpool), Diego López (Villarreal), David De Gea (Atlético), Víctor Valdés (Barcelona) cheers

Defensas: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Raúl Albiol (Real Madrid), Álvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Gerard Piqué (Barcelona), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), César Azpilicueta (Osasuna)

Centrocampistas: Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Xavi Hernández (Barcelona), Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona), David Silva (Valencia), Juan Mata (Valencia), Marcos Senna (Villarreal), Jesús Navas (Sevilla), Cesc Fábregas (Arsenal), Santi Cazorla (Villarreal), Javi Martínez (Athletic)

Delanteros: David Villa (Valencia), Álvaro Negredo (Sevilla), Fernando Torres (Liverpool), Dani Güiza (Fenerbahce), Fernando Llorente (Athletic), Pedro Rodríguez (Barcelona)

Only real surprises for me are the inclusion of Cazorla who has been either injured or mediocre this year and Azpilicueta ahead of a second natural left back like Fernando Navarro or Ignacio Monreal.

Looks nice. Who will get dropped? Probably Llorente and Martinez which will be a shame.

Would probably drop those bolded myself, but I think Guiza + Mata will go.

My guess is the following will not go:

De Gea, Valdes, Azpilicueta, Cazorla, Martinez, Pedro, Negredo or Llorente.

If it were me I would drop:

Diego Lopez, Valdes, Azpilicueta, Senna, Busquets, Cazorla, Guiza

Interesting to see a lot people on the Marca message boards calling for Reyes. I have to say also, it's a pity that Arteta is never considered.

I would have selected Reyes over Cazorla, even if he didn't make the final cut. Cazorla has had a truncated season and doesn't have many minutes to his name. I like him, but he's hardly vital for Spain either.

I think Del Bosque's list is more or less spot on. Arteta would be nice but where's the space for another creative central midfielder. Don't agree with Reyes, he needs to show me more than one good season of form before I'm convinced he's back on course with his career.

I would take Reyes even if it is just as an x-factor who can bring something unexpected. Think Javi Martinez should go over Senna even if Senna has the experience needed.

Out of topic, but there are reports that Pato have three things in common with Wayne Bridge. The first one is that both are professional footballers. They are not going to the WC. Anyone guess the third?

    They're always injured?

Did Lucio sleep with Pato's gf or something like that?

No, but that Milan defender called Marcus Diniz is sleeping with her and they haven't divorce yet.

    Is it a reliable source?

I just heard from my very good source again that the reason VV, might not be called up and hasn't been called up before, is because he and reina doesn't get along at all, and since reina has already established himself in the team, DB doesn't want to upset the team harmony by calling VV.

but his form has been such over the past two seasons, that its hard to ignore him.

I am upset I really am!

Before I said Portugal getting to the last four is like winning it.

After CQ picked a squad like this I am hoping for last 16!

    Portugal’s World Cup squad*:

Goalkeepers: Eduardo (Braga), Beto (FC Porto) Daniel Fernandes (Iraklis)

Defenders: Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea), Miguel (Valencia), Fabio Coentrao (Benfica), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea), Bruno Alves (FC Porto), Ricardo Costa (Lille), Rolando (FC Porto), Pepe (Real Madrid), Duda (Malaga) Ze Castro (Deportivo)

Midfielders: Tiago (Atletico Madrid), Deco (Chelsea), Raul Meireles (FC Porto), Miguel Veloso (Sporting), Pedro Mendes (Sporting), Danny (Zenit St Peterburg)

Wingers/Forwards: Simao Sabrosa (Atletico Madrid), Nani (Manchester United), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Liedson (Sporting), Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen)

Portugal have such a shit midfield/defence and keeper but Nani and Ronaldo is to much quality to dismiss your chances. CQ has to have some balls and play positive football though.

Eddy is good better than any English keeper.

Our Defence is a big worry but as Midfield we have better technicians than England.

Danny Alves in terms of creativity/vision/skill>>>>>>>>any English midfielder.

    Nani? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Its going to be intresting how CQ uses CR but I still see a struggle for Seleccao das Quinas but I am confident of coming out of our group but as for after that not expecting much.

I am surprised CQ never picked Quaresma because he has made some strange choices i.e picking players out of form and Quaresma would fit in nicely in that category.

It's also surprising that RQ did not leave Inter (and he had the chance), especially in a world cup year. He seems content to just sit on the bench.

the players in red are the players i would eliminate

löw already said he will pick all 6 strikers into the squad for south africa

good thing is many defenders can play 2 positions in the defence, i think that will be the reason he will pick 3 defenders to kick out
