    Messi 2010 or Ronaldo 1997?

Post by Alive and Kicking on Mon May 17, 2010 6:38 am

Both have the same amounts of goals in La Liga: 34

Ronaldo was 20 years old: 34 goals in 37 games (44 goals in 47 games) U.E.F.A cup Winner

Messi is 22. Scored 34 goals in 35 games affraid and 8 c.l goals in 11 games.

Two amazingly performance by two amazing players but which is better?

It was Ronaldo's first season playing in Spain, whereas Messi has been there for a while. Messi had to play the C.L though, and Ronaldo the U.E.F.A cup against the mighty P.S.G.

I think as always with polls like these, people rate former players always higher than actual players.
When there is a new "messi" in 5-10 years and everyone compares him to the actual messi, most would vote for the original.

In the past, everything was better. jocolor

    ok

You only have to look at the cynical posts made about Messi in the first leg against Arsenal.

To be fair tho, thats also coz the former players have had their entire career, where as current players like Messi have many years of football left.... it may happen that Messi becomes a bigger legend than Ronaldo in 10 years time, but you can understand why most people are voting Ronaldo here.... that ingrate bucktooth was an amazing player in the late 90s, and has achieved a lot in his career...

R9 for me. because it was his debut season in La Liga, and he was a teenager, and it seemed nothing (but an unforeseen fit) could stop him.

Also Nike had a promotional event at my school just because of Ronaldo. He was that good. Very Happy

But the question was not who was the overall better player but in a specific part (both at oung age, same number of goals and all and without national team influence too)
And I dont think its as clear cut as the votes imply. Thus my post...

    20 vs 22

First season vs eased into it

    Easy question.

Why you'd want to compare the two is another question : why ask if the Mona Lisa is better than David ? Just accept both are an almost superhuman accomplishment, just sit back...relax...and enjoy *both* if you have the opportunity Ale

If you just literally compare individual records and performances throughout the respective seasons i would actually be willing to go for Ronaldo out of the two.

I know, but the problem is that people will not "forget" what Ronaldo did after 97. Thats why there will be a bias.

Anyways, Messi is one of my fav players, and I hate Ronaldo. But I voted Ronaldo, coz IMO he was just phenomenal as a kid - I have never seen a 20 yr old have THAT kind of an end product.

It's arguing for the sake of it arguing - only a tool would say they don't rate both. But Ronaldo does shade it slightly given it was his first season.

I wouldn't turn my nose up at Messi like Ozil (who doesn't rate him Laugh). He is more than capable of raping all over a team on his own.

Just to be clear i voted for ronaldo. even though all those goals fail to help us win the league.

But messi won't get much votes, so this is a waste of a pole, because

    1) people tend to think players in the past as being better than they actually were.

    2) Messi isn't enough of a fantastico.

Dinho 05/06 Vs Ronaldo now that would be interesting

Dinho wins that one for me.

As incredible as Messi is right now, Ronaldo scoring all this goals had a much, much tougher task. League was closer, he was younger and it was his 1st season in La Liga. Barcelona under Robson wasn't very good team and had a quite defensive line-up - with double pivot of Popescu and Guardiola playing most of the time, in front of central defence of Couto/Blanc/Nadal (2 of them). I didn't like they way Barca was playing that season and Real won deservedly a title at that time. Ronaldo, along with Luis Enrique, although he struggled to find a position and De La Pena starting his career, were only bright spots for Barca at that time.

He was okay, he was good, but far away from immense. He also had to split his minutes to De La Pena, because Robson wasn't keen on playing Little Budda as pivot.

    Barcelona
After Santos FC, he moved to the Catalan club FC Barcelona in 1996. He was a first team regular for two seasons and scored 18 goals overall. Barcelona fans still remember him for his ability to score game-winning goals against Real Madrid.

    That's the talk indeed.

"if Romario scored a girl in the night before the match, he'd score in the game too"

Stan Valckx was Romario's partner in crime, they'd go clubbing and pubbing together : Romario looking to score girls, Valckx scoring at least 10 pints.

Hiddink was in charge of PSV in those days....and Romario's lack of training activity was becoming a serious threat to the discipline in the group. Hiddink thought long and hard about it and found the following solution :

He addressed the matter in public and let the team decide :

    * either they would make Romario exempt => so special that he didn't need to do normal training. In exchange for that special status, Romario would be held accountable for his actions by the team and no longer by the manager.

    * or they wouldn't accept a status aparte and Romario would be forced to train like the rest of them

Of course they opted for the first choice, which as a side effect knitted the players more into a team than they had been before.

Football was ace in those days Ale
