even to think about that rooney is in the same league to messi and ronaldo is laughtable

does drobga or torres think they in the same league to messi or ronaldo?

rooney is not better then those players, only the english media made him that bigger then he really is

you can rooney compare too

eto
villa
eto
torres
drogba

one of the best strikers in europe, but how long would be the list of Worlds GREAT EVER players when we would include rooney

i could add

klinsmann
völler
rummenigge
müller

he is young, but i have my doubts he will become much better, his game is far too physical

Ozil mate you're argument falls short on the basis you don't know what you're talking about.

Middle of last season you said he was rubbish because he never scored the 1st goal. He then scored 5 first goals in the next 8 matches. Almost just to shoot you down.

You then said he hasnt scored anything in europe. He scored 2 v Milan home and away then against Bayern also...

And now im not sure what you're argument is bar mentioning a bunch of other names. Rooney is more talented than all of those. He is a creative player who has a great workrate with pace power and skill...good ball control good first touch, fantastic passing...scored a lot of goals. This you cant say for many others.

He is up there with Messi and Ronaldo but all 3 have diff characteristics...preference can dictate which one you go for. I would go for Ronaldo but Rooney isn't far behind.

Podolski was extremely disappointing against Serbia, not just because of the penalty he missed. Awfully selfish, and Germans hate selfish players. I hope for his and the team's sake that he learned something at least.

@Otto,

Rooney has been gash. Truly awful by his standards.

However, you shot me down for not standing up and arguing that he would out perform Poldi from the start -

well, let me now have my predictive boast and say: I told you so.

I had a very strong feeling he was going to struggle having seen how he's played (or not, as has been the case) since his injury against Bayern Munich.

He's physically and mentally just not there. It's so very plain to see.

Despite that, he still was a post away from scoring today, and whilst hardly setting the World alight, was an improvement on the first 2 games.

So there is still hope. Even if we do draw Germany in the next round. Which should be fun, if it happens Ale

By the way - I've been away because of a death in the family and not because I don't enjoy our little tete-a-tetes.

It kind of puts into perspective what is essentially a game of 11 men kicking a pigskin around Ale

Thanks fellas. However, Rooney wasn't THAT bad, I'm sure he'll improve in the next game Ale

But seriously, cheers. It was not sudden, had been on the cards for awhile.

This isn't about my problems though - onwards and upwards.

Poldi and Rooney will now be able to battle it out on the same pitch.

Let the duel commence

I agree with you Ozil.

However, for slightly different reasons. You say it's because he game is too physical.

My opinion is that Rooney's problems are his mentality. I've seen him in the flesh absolutely tear sides to pieces with a perfect blend of vision and technique. Standing out in games at every level, club / international / Champions League etc.

He's no fancy trickster in the Ronaldo / Ronaldinho mould, but when on top of his game, all the basics are flawless - touch, passing, ability to play out of tight spaces etc. A "craque" as the South Americans call it.

What he LACKS is the temperament to remain calm in pressured situations. He is led too much by his emotions. Anyone who works in a job knows the problems with being controlled by your emotions - you lose focus and the clarity to make reasoned decisions in situations.

Look at Messi. So calm and focussed, even when being hacked to pieces. Infact, look at the German team, including Poldi. They have that ability to play with their heads, calmness personified - a controlled will to win and being able to play free of fear. Massive credit to them for this.

Here, the attention on Rooney and the England team is to play with passion and aggression. Apparently, this is Rooney's "strength", yet when you watch his best performances, those are the ones where he looks the most calm and focussed. Not being led by anger and frustration, charging all around the pitch trying to appease those wanting to see "passion".

This is what is stopping him from becoming a great. Because when he does play with head, he is an exceptional player. It's not happening at this World Cup. Frustration has completely got the better of him, and I expect him to be going home on Sunday having had a very poor World Cup. Which is a shame in my opinion.

Ouch, a painful second round knock out for Rooney. Not one decent effort landed in the contest and a chastening experience for England's big hope.

Poldi wins, easily.

Rooney has been awful.

Lucky for him he goes back to the luxury of a 120,000 a week contract in the safety of playing for United. No doubt banging in loads of goal in the process. Does he care about England? How he's played so far, I didn't see it. Shoulders hunched, playing with none of his trademark nous. Crap.

Good luck Poldi - I'm sure Otto is loving this, and congratulations.

Poldi was pretty wasteful, goal aside.

But Rooney was completely inept. Don't remember a single good touch this tournament. I blame Fergie. c**t.

I wonder what goes through Rooney's mind. The World Cup, the place where a player validates his hype or the hype is utterly smashed and reality sets in. All the "world class" English players looked totally out of their depth, away from their friendly confines of accomodated club team set ups and friendly officiating.

Their bubble completely burst in front of a worldwide audience. Shocked

Podolski, what a player for his country... him and Klose, always deliver for Germany... whatever their club form, doesn't matter... I can't believe that Podolski has 40 goals for Germany already... at 25, he is just 3 goals shy of the legendary Uwe Seeler, and 5 shy of Rummenigge!

That is awesome

Even you can see the folly in writing off a striker after a 4 game performance over the summer.

Don't forget old plum: Klose and Co. drew a blank in Euro 2004, after hitting 5 past the mighty Saudi Arabia in 2002. Imagine where we'd all be had we WRITTEN off the Pole's contributions based on his 2004 woes.

Rooney just didn't do it. He is a Scouse fuck for being so underwhelming, but he won't be the first or last player to do so.

Most importatnly: unlike Lampard, Gerrard and Co who really haven't performed for years now, he HAS put in a number of excellent performances for England over the last 24 months, on a regular basis (14 goals in qualifying, more than any of your beloved Poles), so deserves to keep his place in the team and give it another go in 4 years Ale
