World Cup organiser considers vuvuzela ban after TV complaints

Fifa says it will take action if it finds grounds to do so

Their cacophonous din has so far been a soundtrack for the World Cup, to the delight of some and the profound annoyance of others. But organisers said that the vuvuzela, one of the most visible and certainly most audible motifs of the tournament's opening weekend, could yet be banned from inside stadiums.

Organising committee chief executive Danny Jordaan said he would continue to monitor their use and that a ban could be enforced if there were "grounds to do so".

Fifa and organisers have already said that they will ban the instrument if any are thrown onto the pitch or used as a weapon and urged fans not to blow them during national anthems.

"We did say that if any land on the pitch in anger we will take action. We've tried to get some order. We have asked for no vuvuzelas during national anthems or stadium announcements. It's difficult but we're trying to manage the best we can," he told the BBC.

"We've had some broadcasters and individuals [complaining] and it's something we are evaluating on an on-going basis." The BBC and ITV have received complaints from viewers about the background noise and, while both have said they will monitor the situation, they have also made the point that it is important to reflect the atmosphere of the tournament.

Fifa has previously shrugged off complaints from broadcasters, players and coaches about the noise from the plastic horns that are being sold on every street corner in South African host cities.

Following last year's Confederations Cup, there were complaints from coaches, players and broadcasters about the noise. But Fifa said that the horns formed part of the unique African atmosphere of the tournament and refused to ban them.

But Jordaan himself, who battled for 16 years to bring the World Cup to South Africa, said he would prefer the 10 stadiums hosting the World Cup to ring to the sound of singing and dancing than the drone of the vuvuzela.

"I would prefer singing. It's always been a great generator of a wonderful atmosphere in stadiums and I would try to encourage them to sing," he said.

"In the days of the struggle (against apartheid) we were singing, all through our history it's our ability to sing that inspired and drove the emotions."

Ban it for all non SA games. It makes sense. Or allow only 500 in per game just limit it so we can hear other stuff also.

Banning them will be a disgrace for this WC. I'm not a fan of vuvuzelas, but it would be just ridiculous.

Why? If the world cup was in England and people were boooing non stop for 90 minutes every game people would call it stupid and want it banned. IMO people like you only stick up for it due to it's nature as a poor country or non western...really banning or limiting the vuvuzelas makes perfect sense. Banning religious messages after celebrations is a lot more ridiculous to me. They don't harm anyone or make people deaf.

why? because silencing people is wrong IMO. and no, I don't think if England fans booed every game it should be forbidden, even if it's stupid. I think banning people from making any kind of noise in a stadium is VERY wrong. banning people from communicating is wrong. I live in a democracy, and I like it this way.

And don't tell me that noise is not communication. It gets more intense or not according to the context in the game, if you pay a little attention.

Moreover, banning it because western fans are annoyed gives them the right to ask for a banning in Europe regarding things that annoy them in another WC.

And, well, be prepared for the WC in Brazil. I'm quite sure the USA, for example, would have had their anthem booed like hell here. And Argentina, well, poor Argentina... Every game for them will be an away game.

What's ridiculous is that if they ban the vuvuzela because a few people find it annoying then the resentment that will cause is likely to provoke violence. I'd rather have a distracting buzzing sound than people beating the shit out of each other in the street.

Of course, European materialist scum think they should be able to float through life banning everything they take a momentary dislike to. And think we have the right to tell others what they can and cannot do.

Indeed, fuck FIFA. I hope they ban it, and everyone just ignores the ban.

Some of the stadiums are stunning. Bit disappointing that some of the less glamourous games and attracting capacity crowds. Its a pity that they didn't pre-empt this and offer the tickets to local children.

Serious, why cant you understand that you dammed vuvuzela is ruining this WC for lots of people and even the players are complaining. Let me put for you, you are just hosting the damn thing, you dont own the World Cup.

Yesterday I had to put the games on mute, this KILLS the fun of watching the WC. I waited FOUR FUCKING YEARS for this competition, and your fans are ruining for me. I almost wish this crap had never gone to Africa. That’s how much I hate your damn vuvuzela.

I would be over the moon if they banned the vuvuzela. It has spoiled the World Cup for me so far and the continuous drones of the trumpets are ruining coverage for all fans watching.

In the absence of a security or administrative issue to complain about, the Western media who are pissed off at no longer dominating the global game have latched onto the vuvuzela as something to complain about.

I would rather hear vuvuzelas than yet another chorus of that 'do do do do' song, or a bunch of white, working class men singing 'God save the Queen' when they don't believe in God and the Queen is the person keeping them in relative poverty. If the sound bothers you that much then turn the sound down. If that ruins the game for you then I'm afraid you're being too precious.

It's just old people complaining about rock music as far as I'm concerned.

Saying 'this thing that is alien to me pisses me off so I'm going to exaggerate massively, stereotype Africans in a pejorative manner, and say they shouldn't be allowed to do anything that I find annoying and hence shouldn't be allowed to host the world cup' is fucking racist. No amount of broken English statements that don't add up to an argument is going to change my mind.

It has a lot to do with racism. The history of colonialism is full of 'this thing in strange and unknown, therefore we must see it as a threat and destroy it'.

I'm not saying we should ban white working class people from singing, or saying that countries with white working class people should be prevented from hosting the World Cup. By contrast, there are a number of people saying EXACTLY those things about Africans because they find the vuvuzela annoying.

It is ruining the atmosphere and it should be banned. I dont know about you 'dont panic', but i want to hear some noise when a team score, not the same fucking BBNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRR which you can hear for the entirety of the rest of the match. Since when was the world cup about one nation and one nations traditions anyway? Its about a gathering of cultures and if one is overriding all the others then that's unfair. Its not racist, biggoted or narrow minded. I'd be embarresed if I was a South African and I was imposing my culture on so many who just dont want to hear it. No wonder the South African league isn't very good if the supporters claim that they're using the Vuvuzelas as 'inspiration for their teams.' Let them blow on it in their own matches.

You don't want to hear BBNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRR all game so therefore you're narrow minded...

Nah mate, shut the fuck up.

My guess is that you're not even african. You're just here to pick a fight with someone. You're not even reading the posts you reply to.

If anything, don't insult other africans by saying you represent them. Africa is a lot bigger than your town.
