Squad announced for the Germany friendly.. two new faces, Giovinco & Matri. Prandelli continues to give youth their chances Tho I am a bit surprised at the exclusion of Marchisio, he is definately better than the likes of Nocerino...

Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), Sirigu (Palermo), Viviano (Bologna);

Defenders: Astori (Cagliari), Bonucci (Juventus), Cassani (Palermo), Criscito (Genoa), Chiellini (Juventus), Maggio (Napoli), Ranocchia (Inter);

Midfielders: Aquilani (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Giovinco (Parma), Mauri (Lazio), Montolivo (Fiorentina), *Motta (Inter), Nocerino (Palermo), Palombo (Sampdoria);

Strikers: Borriello (Roma), Cassano (Milan), Matri (Juventus), Pazzini (Inter), Rossi (Villarreal).

*Motta's inclusion is provisional... FIFA are yet to decide his case...

What line-up would you like Prandelli to try...even on an experimental basis with a view for the next big competition?

It would be Criscito or Chiellini at left back.... and Giovinco probably behind the strikers. De Rossi and Motta will probably start alongside Montolivo/Aquilani, FIFA allowing.

Prandelli's team will most likely line up like this:
Buffon
Casani - Ranocchia - Bonucci - Chiellini
Montolivo - Motta - De Rossi
Mauri
Pazzini - Cassano

Its an interesting new line-up, tho I would have hoped to see Maggio start at RB considering his amazing form this season. Maybe Prandelli doesn't want to risk such an attacking FB against a top team, considering the CB partnership is so new. Glad to see Motta there, I have a feeling that Pirlo's days as Azzurri's deep lying playmaker are over. He will probably be tried at trequartista on his return. Also I hope to see Giovinco getting a chance in the 2nd half in place of Mauri.

So happy with Prandelli's work so far.... focusing & keeping faith in the new generation - Italy needed this like a fish needs water!!

Inter's influence on the Azzurri is growing, with 3 players in the team (Pazzini, Ranocchia, Motta) plus Bonucci (Inter youth product) and Viviano (co-owned by Inter). We also soon expect Balotelli (Inter youth Product) and perhaps someday Santon (Inter owned) back in the squad...

Inter are the second most represented side after Juventus (5 players). Palermo also have 3 players like Inter, tho perhaps we should count Inter's contribution as 3.5 considering Viviano is co-owned by us.

Chiellini at LB in the Nazionale by Prandelli speaks well of Delneri's tactical shift as well. Ranocchia is still untried but then these are the opportunities where the coach will see how the young stars fare. If it was not a friendly I would have preferred seeing Chillini in the center alongside Bonucci with Criscito at LB

It would be nice to see Giovinco get some time as well and probably Matri as well. I believe that both him and Pazzini together supported by a good fantasista can really harass many a fine defenses

Prandelli's Italy is beggining to take shape... fully fit, I would hope for something like the following line up:

Buffon
Maggio - Ranocchia - Bonucci - Chiellini
Motta - De Rossi
Cassano - Pirlo - Balotelli
Pazzini

Rest of Squad:

Viviano/Sirigu
Cassani - Astori - Criscito - Santon
Aquilani - Montolivo - Marchisio
Rossi - Giovinco
Borriello

I will go as far as suggesting that only 5 positions are open in Prandelli's squad for 2012, he has already selected 17 players (injuries permitting). Those 5 in question are the ones in blue above. And some players who could fight for these open spots include:

FBs: Balzaretti, De Silvestri, Motta, Antonelli, Abate, De Ceglie, Pasqual
CM: Palombo, Nocerino,
AM: Mauri, Lazzari, Diamanti,
Striker: Quagliarella, Gilardino, Iaquinta, Matri, Amauri, Okaka

Also possible is that Prandelli may take a winger instead of one of the FB's in blue... but thats it, I think Prandelli has managed to decide his core group pretty quickly considering that he had to start from scratch!! And this new bunch of Azzurri gives me hope, so much more hope than I had with the last 2 regimes!

Thanks mate, I want it too.... and with someone like Prandelli as coach, I have a feeling we will get it or a variation of it. Coz it won't be long before Prandelli becomes too adventurous for the 4312, and tries his old favourite - the attack minded 4231...

Can't wait for Prandelli to name his squad for the crucial Slovenia qualifier... Coz Prandelli has announced a brave/awesome code of ethics, which punishes all violent/unsporting behavior at any level. Which means that any player who breaks this code even at his club, will bne dropped from the national team.

Ranocchia, Cassani and Pirlo are out injured. Those are typically 3 of Prandelli's starters. And then two of his other stars (De Rossi & maybe even Balotelli) have broken the code at their club in recent games. So will Prandelli have the courage to drop 2 of his stars and risk losing a crucial qualifier?

This is going to be interesting.

Fuckin hell, he has dropped both of them!! Balotelli and De Rossi left out!! This might hurt Italy, but respect to Prandelli for sticking to his principles.

Football needs more Prandelli's.

Prandelli's squad: Parolo gets a well deserved debut call up, Santon is recalled, and Giovinco retains his place.

Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), Sirigu (Palermo), Viviano (Bologna)

Defenders: Astori (Cagliari), Balzaretti (Palermo), Bonucci (Juventus), Chiellini (Juventus), Criscito (Genoa), Gastaldello (Sampdoria), Maggio (Napoli), Ranocchia (Inter), Santon (Cesena) cheers

Midfielders: Aquilani (Juventus), Marchisio (Juventus), Mauri (Lazio), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Thiago Motta (Inter), Nocerino (Palermo), Parolo (Cesena)

Forwards: Cassano (Milan), Gilardino (Fiorentina), Giovinco (Parma) cheers , Matri (Juventus), Pazzini (Inter), Rossi (Villarreal)

A talented squad, but perhaps lacking in wide players (especially if we want to play 4-2-3-1) but then again, no wide players are performing well.

Spot on about Prandelli blue. Sticking to his principles, and i like the way he is calling players based on who is playing well. Unlike his predecessor, He doesn't seem to have any biasedness. For example, he had previous issues with Pazzini and Maggio, yet he is still very happy to call them, whilst he was a big fan of someone like Marchionni, but he hasn't been called up once.

Maybe not, but they are younger. Di Natale is 33, and Prandelli does not consider him a candidate for 2012 or 2014, and he has ignored the temptation to call the likes of Totti, Di Natale, Gattuso, Nesta, Miccoli, etc... which is so refreshing, finally someone is brave enough to rebuild the Azzurri!

Where did you get that? I thought he did agree:

We lose something without Daniele De Rossi and Mario Balotelli, but the code of ethics must be respected. Both of them need these negative experiences, Mario especially because he is growing. - Buffon

http://football-italia.net/mar22k.html
I think almost anyone who watches football would agree that Balotelli and De Rossi need some discipline. That said, for the first time I have seen Balotelli admit to his problem so honestly... "I need help, I always ruin everything" - never heard something like that from the kid before, usually he reacts to punishment with more rebellious attitude. So maybe this decision by Prandelli might end up doing some good.

Camporese? Very exciting talent, just broke into Fiorentina this season due to injuries and did a commendable job for a 18 year old. Has also just started featuring for the Azzurrini... too early to say how good he can become, lets give him a coupla years. 18 is too young to judge a CB in Italy.

Considering the circumtsances, probably the best XI.... man, how long since I have been able to say that about the Azzurri (f*** off Lippi, Donadoni). That said, its a very new XI, and we cannot expect too much.
Slovenia: Handanovic; Brecko, Suler, Cesar, Jokic; Birsa, Koren, Radosavljevic, Kim; Dedic, Novakovic

Subs: J. Handanovic, Andjelkovic, Ljubijankic, Bacinovic, Ilicic, Sukalo, Mavric
Italy: Buffon; Maggio, Bonucci, Chiellini, Balzaretti; Montolivo, Motta, Aquilani; Mauri, Cassano; Pazzini
Subs: Viviano, Criscito, Marchisio, Gilardino, Gastaldello, Rossi, Nocerino
Slovenia must be stronger than I thought, if Ilicic does not make their starting XI...

Unfortunately, Giovinco & Santon do not make the bench Sad
