Having said that, I don't see why this should have an impact on Ballack's captaincy in the Mannschaft.

Lell is no German international and won't ever become one. It's a private issue between those two and entirely unrelated to the Mannschaft or Ballack's position as captain there.

Could anyone explain what actually happened between Lell, Lell's girlfriend (wife? fiancee?) and Ballack based on articles published at the moment?

Lell gave a few interviews and made some mysterious accusations about Ballack without exactly saying what's going on.

He said his private problems with his girlfriend had something to do with Ballack, that he crossed the line and that his behaviour can't be excused by anything.

Asked what Ballack supposedly did he said he can't say anything to that at the moment as they are expecting a child but he will do so in the future. He will decide when its the right point and and then he went on saying: "Not everyone is like Michael Ballack, who believes, that he can do whatever he wants, who just enters into the private lives of others and destroys everything, without thinking much about it - but maybe when you are the Germany captain that's how you think."
