Post by Kroos on Fri Aug 20, 2010 1:56 pm

tonight the 48. Bundesliga season starts with

20.08.10 20:30 FC Bayern München : VfL Wolfsburg (live in free tv)

21.08.10 15:30 1899 Hoffenheim : SV Werder Bremen
21.08.10 15:30 Borussia M'gladbach : 1. FC Nürnberg
21.08.10 15:30 1. FC Köln : 1. FC Kaiserslautern
21.08.10 15:30 SC Freiburg : FC St. Pauli
21.08.10 15:30 Hannover 96 : Eintracht Frankfurt
21.08.10 18:30 Hamburger SV : FC Schalke 04

22.08.10 15:30 1. FSV Mainz 05 : VfB Stuttgart
22.08.10 17:30 Borussia Dortmund : Bayer 04 Leverkusen

i think in the end bayern will win

strong contenders are leverkusen, dortmund, wolfsburg and the hsv (the last two have a big advantage, they dont play in europe)

i think schalke has lost quality and also they play in cl, this wont help to reach the cl again

Agree.

Bayern are head and shoulders above everyone else at the moment. They should not have too much trouble defending their title. It will be interesting to see if they can solve their defensive frailties this year. Badstuber has been reasonable solid as CB in pre-season, but I am not yet fully convinced of Contento. He lacks positioning and anticipation IMO.

Leverkusen, Hamburg and Wolfsburg do have solid squads and they surely will be contenders for an EL/CL spot. I do not see them seriously challenging for the title though. Without Kroos, Leverkusen lack creativity from midfield and Wolfsburg failed to seal the deal with Diego and will now be forced to hold onto Misimovic in midfield who looked very, very underwhelming and unbothered in pre-season.

Stuttgart and Bremen will be up there as well, as usual, but they lost Khedira and Özil so they will maybe suffer a bad run of results especially at the beginning of the season.

Dortmund have turned to a more possession-oriented approach instead of relying too much on this over-hasty and physical demanding vertical attacking play of last season, which has been a good decision of Klopp. Their pre-season games have been very good and hopefully they can take this good form into the season ahead. I would love to see them challenging for a CL spot this season, realistically though a place between 4th and 6th is more feasible.

As for Schalke, they lost too much quality, in particular in the defence. Metzelder has been awful in pre-season, looks slow and makes a lot of stupid mistakes which does not bode well for them in the CL. I really have my doubts if Magath can work his magic again this season. What's more Schalke fans are becoming increasingly fed up with Magath and his dictatorship-like style of management which could also have a negative impact on Schalke's performance.

---

Demichelis has been kicked out of the match-day squad.

Do you think there is going to be any fall-out from Demichelis getting dropped from the squad? Or will van Gaal bring him straight back in to the team once he has built his fitness levels up to an acceptable level?

Agree with your assessments of the squads. I think HSV and Wolfsburg look in decent shape to challenge for the CL places, but think Schalke will find it tougher going this time.

A couple of Honigstein's previews of the season for anyone who is interested:

What is it with Schalke anyway? They get huge crowds and regularly get into Europe, but they never seem to spend any money. What is their financial situation?

Dortmund have a very good squad, and I read an article on Goal.com today that they have sold the most season tickets in the Bundesliga for the new season (over 51,000) Would be great to see them at the top again, and with players like Barrios, Hummels, Zidan, Sahin, Subotic, Goetzes, Blaszczykowski and Kagawa they should be capable of competing.

Re: Goetzes, never seen him play, but I heard some German correspondent absolutely rave mad about him on Talksport the other day, and he sounds promising!

There was a lot of talk last season about their financial problems, but from what I can remember reading I think the details were all rather vague because Schalke don't need to open their books publicly as they aren't a listed company - so there was a lot of guess work involved.

Some reports said they were ~€120m in debt, some other reports said more. Others said that the debt was manageable, but their problem was one of liquidity with too much of their money tied up (dealing with the stadium for example). It seems clear that they've been trying to reduce their wage bill and consequently have had some big wage players leave the club, and haven't spent much on incoming transfers. They had a lot of under-performing signings on sizeable wages and little chance of recouping the original transfer outlay. I think they resolved their issues last season by reaching a deal with some of their sponsors or through bank loans, but I never really got a clear idea of what was happening there.

Do people think Klose will maintain his World Cup form, or will it be back to his underwhelming performances of last season?

Rummenigge just said that Demichelis asked to be dropped from the squad. Shocked

It looks like he wants to leave Bayern.

I'm surprised that Bayern haven't tried to strengthen their defence already this summer. Van Buyten and Demichelis are poor centre-backs and it's the most obvious area they can improve their team without great expenditure.

You can hear McLaren shouting instructions in English. I wonder if any of the players don't have a clue what he's saying.

Van Bommel with the first booking of the season. I bet the odds on that were rather short. Very Happy

What have McLaren's interviews been like? Presumably he has learnt from the whole comedy accent debacle at Twente. Has he tried to speak any German yet?
