There are a few young talents in Scotland: McGeady, Burke, Kevin Thomson, Dean Shiels (despite having only one eye), Maloney, Stevie Smith, Calum Elliot; and a few more, perhaps.

Out of those, Maloney and Thompson may thrive. McGeady is the most talented, although he lacks the necessary athleticism to perform consistently at the highest level; he’ll perform exceedingly in individual games, though.

^^omg, someone else that knows something about Scottish football? Some good players there, criminal that you left out Scott Brown tho, who's quite possibly the best of the lot. Wink Boyd too, is worth a mention.

As a Hibs fan (don't ask), I'm obviously a fan of Thomson & Brown, Shiels too. I believe he was in the Arsenal youth setup, before he joined Hibs' youth team. I like him a lot, and it's a shame he's not starting every game, because he's been impressive whenever he has played, but competition as it is at the moment, means he's not a regular starter. Surprising as 'competion for places' and 'Hibs' in the same sentence is an alien concept to us Hibs fans, but at the moment this is the case. We also recently bought the Morrocan Zidane, Smile who's been playing well.

Personally I don't think Mcgeady is as good as Maloney or Burke, who all play similar positions. Maloney always gets in the team over Mcgeady as well. I would have been well annoyed at Scotland losing him to Ireland, if it wasn't for those two.

Naismith, Fletcher, Elliot, etc are the next batch of youngsters. Just hope that all this talent is used by Walter Smith, who seems reluctant to blood in some youth, instead sticking with the deadwood like Dailly, Quashie, Alexander etc, who were never good to begin with....

Hi Calidad,

Thanks for adding to the others I listed. I realised I’d missed a few out like Brown, Naismith and Fletcher.

Mowbray has done very well to bring good players to the club like Benjelloun. The manner in which he has attained good performances from players like Sproule is very impressive too. As is his ability to nurture young players into the first-team.

Against Rangers, Hibs were outstanding, imposing themselves all over the pitch for more or less the duration of the game, I believe. Hopefully that continues.

I’m not very keen on Kris Boyd. Yes, he is a proficient finisher – and I can imagine an argument that that’s all that counts for a forward – but his technical ability and pace are critically lacking, and for that reason I just can’t warm to him.

I agree that Maloney is a better overall player than McGeady, but I think McGeady possesses better technical ability than him. McGeady is, I believe, let down by his genes: he lacks the necessary athleticism to thrive at a higher level; Maloney, on the other hand, has a good balance between athleticism and skill such that he could probably do well in most footballing environments. For the same reason as McGeady, but not anywhere near to the same extent, Burke, I think, wouldn’t be as effective as he is for Rangers in other footballing environments. In comparison to McGeady, though, I suspect his attitude is better, and this would make up for his other shortcomings. I should say, of course, that this is all just my opinion and I may be wrong.

I don’t know much about the Scottish national team, I’m afraid, although I think they won the Kirin Cup recently.

Thanks

Re Brown, I like the way he imposes himself on the pitch. His aggression certainly unnerves opposing players. He is also technically proficient and versatile too. That he has improved his temperament on the pitch is also encouraging: I think an improvement in this regard was needed.

In saying that, my own preference is for Maloney, McGeady and Thomson over him: Maloney for his attitude and temperament, McGeady for his technical ability and Thomson for this controlled aggression and fierce tackling. Of course, Brown may be a more effective player than any of them.

Yes, Thomson should prove to be a good DM for Scotland. He's only 20, and is already Hibs captain. Strong in the tackle and on the ball, and a very good passer of the ball. I like Brown because he tackles, runs at players, scores goals, etc. He is as complete a player as there is in Scotland at the moment.

I agree with you, that Boyd is slow and isn't as technically sounds as others, but that said, he's technically able, and as you say very prolific.

So where does your interest in Scottish football come from them? I was actually born in England with an English mum (tho she's 1/4 Brazilian) - and half Scottish/Spanish dad, who was born in Edinburgh. Smile

I’ll take your word for it that Brown is the most complete player in Scotland. With all of his attributes, and on the basis he can maintain his temperament on the pitch (a crucial factor for interested parties, I think), do you think Hibs will be able to retain him for much longer?

I live in Scotland – the south side of Glasgow – so I’m exposed to it through reading and hearing about it, as well as seeing it now and again.

Well, according to several reports, there are always scouts in and around Easter Road now. I'm led to believe both Chartlon (after their defeat to Hibs in pre-season) & Tottenham (for a while now) are both tracking Brown. Thomson is another that regularly has a lot of attention. Of course Riordan was linked with PSV, Anderlect amongst others last season, but chose to go to Celtic, which I always knew would be a mistake. O'Connor instead went to Locomotiv Moscow, and I believe he is doing well out there. Riordan was far more talented than O'Connor, but has a poor attitude.

Young Fletcher who made UEFA's U19 team of the tournament, is another I expect will have a lot of attention on him soon. I hope the likes of Brown & Thomson stay with us for another couple of seasons or so, to conintue their development, before moving to a decent EPL team (.i.e not one who will get relegated) or elsewhere in Europe. I don't think either want to go to the OF which is a relief.

Out of the current crop of young players in Scotland, I definitely think Gordon is someone who could currently play at the highest level in Europe. For me he is a top GK, and certainly one of the best in the UK. He has proved this for both Scotland and Hearts.

Indeed, I agree with you about Gordon. Aside from his footballing ability, Riordan appears to be quite ignorant and thuggish. I mentioned in another thread that I think that young footballers in Scotland have attitude problems, hindering them from developing into better players.

I look forward to watching Thomson, Shiels, Fletcher, etc, progressing in their careers, hoping that they don’t adopt the same poor attitudes as Riordan, Kenny Miller, McGeady, Charlie Miller, etc.

Although he has a battle over the next couple of years to break in the team in front of Rio, Brown, Vidic and young Evans his central defensive partner in the youth team last year.

You can blame him for all the goals, the defence was also to blame. If Valdes played in a more defensive minded team, where he wouldn't have to deal with so many attacks/defensive fuck ups, people would start appreciating him.
