Neither Soldado nor Aduriz are the sort of striker that are going to create chances for themselves. And Valencia have already sold their two starting wide players from last season that generated most of their danger in attack. That does not seem like a good recipe. Piatti-Parejo-Pablo but none of them are international level players yet. Furthermore 1) it is going to take some time to gel 2) both Piatti and Parejo are going to be experiencing a new level of pressure playing in Valencia and 3) Pablo is gonna have to step it up big time. I think the defense is still pretty sh!t and the centre of midfield has a lot of questions - Albelda is probably past it, Banega is a terrible professional, Topal has injury problems, and Tino Costa is inconsistent. At least Diego Alves should be steady for them.

The biggest factor in their favour is Emery's continuity (even though he's had his ups and downs) and the fact that all their challengers also have question marks. It just depends on which two teams can string the results and performances together that's required for top 4.

Sevilla - Decent squad but questions over whether Manzano can make it work. Very weak in terms of strikers.

Villarreal - Also got some good players but will struggle to handle CL and the league unless they get reinforcements in. Some positions have depth, some don't.

Athletic - A lot of people tipping them for 4th but for me there's a big question over whether they can actually adapt to Bielsa's attacking and experimental nature, rather than the aggressive, direct game that's in their history.

Atletico - Nothing needs to be said.

Malaga - Of course people expect big things because they have a decent manager, have bought sensibly, and had a great pre-season. But we all know that these "get rich quick" success stories always start slowly. Will they be the same?

Marcelino innit? Biggrin

I agree the others have question marks but even Atletico for all of their flaws at least have some top quality players.

Italian media continues to speculate that we will really go hard for Kaka. However, they say that we will try and get Real to pay ha good portion of his wages. Why would Real agree?

If Kaka stays, will he actually get playing time? I hope he comes to Milan.

Aquilani and now Kaka back? You surely must believe in the voodoo powers of your medical staff.

Marca's headline two days ago was Kaka would be allowed to leave for 30m. My guess is he would be allowed to go and for less. But I don't think we would agree to pay his wages. That is what is killing us. 12m euro for someone who is clearly on the bench. But he knows that Mourinho isn't counting on him for anything important and the club is definitely willing to listen to offers (whether that is Milan, Inter, Chelsea, PSG, or Anzhi).

Smile

Aquilani I think played more than 30 times last season for Juve.

Kaka is a question mark, but I think it is a risk worth taking.

@Jaime

Thanks. At this stage, PSG would probably be able to offer what Real Madrid want.

Apparently Diego Ribas' father is in the Vicente Calderon for the final contract negotiations. Could be an Atletico player yet today.

Tamudo signs for Rayo on a free. His experience could be useful for Rayo. He managed 7 last season. If he get between 8-10 this year that would be a good return.

I think they effectively own them. So there would be issues in the (unlikely) event they met in European competition.

Villarreal need to replace Cazorla and I'm surprised they haven't. They have a very thin squad.

Currently I think there most balanced lineup would be;

--------------Lopez
Angel----Zapata--Gonzalo----Catala
-------Bruno--Senna--Valero
---------------Cani
---------Nilmar---Rossi

But Ruben, Marchena, Mussachio aside...they have few quality options of the bench.

Apparently the move for De Guzman broke down but they are close to signing Verdu from Espanyol. He's a good player and I think he fits into Villarreal's overall style of play. Not exactly a Cazorla replacement in a like for like sense. He is more like Cani imo an attacking mid that starts out wide.

Roque Santa Cruz signs for Betis on a one year loan. Potentially a very good signing if he can stay fit.

Not the kind of replacement I hoped for. Decent player, but level below De Guzman, Lafita or Gio dos Santos.

Good news for Valencia: Victor Ruiz will be signed today. Havent seen specifics as far as the transfer fee but it will be a permanent deal apparently.

Could yet be one more signing for Valencia as well: a right back. They are hoping to reach an agreement to release Miguel on a free and then sign a replacement. Azpilicueta and Montoya still the two names being linked most strongly.

Atletico wheeling and dealing!

Elias has been sold to Sporting CP after only just arriving in January - 8,5m euro.

In addition they have signed Diego on loan from Wolfsburg for the season and some Portuguese kid called Pizzi, also on a one year loan from Braga.

A few more odds and ends as the transfer window comes to a close:

*Mouhamadou Dabo moves to Olympique Lyon for €1m.

*Alexandros Tziolis who had been on loan at Racing last year has rescinded his contract with Siena and will sign a permanent deal with the Santander club.

*Valencia have signed Valladolid right back Antonio Barragán for €1,5m. Ok signing but certainly not as good as Azpilicueta nor Montoya.

*Pablo Orbaiz has signed on loan with Olympiakos. It was clear from the beginning that he was not in Bielsa's plans.

*Betis have signed serbian left back Dusko Tosic. No idea if he is any good.

No, I was wrong earlier. The window does close tonight.

There'll be a bit of activity, mostly outgoing at the big clubs: Gago to Roma or Palermo, Pedro Leon to Getafe, Drenthe to ?, Lass Diarra to most probably stay, Hleb to Wolfsburg.

Valencia have signed Victor Ruiz and Antonio Barragan - strengthening their defense, good moves.

You can follow the rest here, via Marca's equivalent of the live tracker that's on BBC/Guardian, etc.

Valencia has done some beautiful business this off season i must say, especially in the defense, Atletico has done some good work as well, maybe they need a striker, has everyone outside of falcao is a bit average, its their managers and their overly cautious approach that will stop both teams from really pushing on IMO.

----------------Alves

---Barragan----Ruiz--Rami---Mathieu

---------T.Costa---Benega/Albelda

-------Pablo--------Canales----Piatti

---------------Soldado

This is a team thats despite how good barca and real are shouldn't be finishing over 20 points behind the 2nd place team.
