Indeed. I'd take the latter in a heartbeat at Liverpool.

Progress! Ale

The only way this can be justified is if Jose wants to play Di Maria and Coentrao on the wings with CR as a striker. silent

Yeah if you look at the comments on A Bola or Record all of the Benfica supporters are celebrating a 'great piece of business'.

No, it is straight 30m for Coentrao. The transfer of Garay is being negotiated separately.

Did Zlatan cost 70m, or "just" 50m (with Etoo released on a free transfer?) Wink

@Madrid fans

what's the word on the streets of Madrid with regards to Mourinho's plans for Khedira ?

now that Sahin is in town, does that mean Mourinho will ROTATE, squeeze them ALL into one midfield

or

is Khedira now out ?

Not sure about Khedira, but apparently they are interested in Marcell Jansen. And possibly Ashley Cole.

My suspicion is that Khedira will still be used primarily. Maybe Mourinho will have the testicles to play Sahin-Alonso at home in the Copa del Rey against a team from Segunda B. But I think in any game that matters we will still see Khedira in there.

The leaders in waiting - five candidates for Real Madrid captaincy should Jose Mourinho replace Iker Casillas

Media reports suggest that Mourinho is contemplating the appointment of a new on-pitch skipper, and Goal.com assesses who the Portuguese will consider for the role

Khedira will definitely have a role to play in the big games and probably in quite many away games. But at home games against weak teams(outside top 6) I think Mourinho will tend to use Sahin-Alonso although I think/hope that Sahin will be eased into the team so Sahin might not be a starter for a while.

Also there has been talk of Mourinho going to a 4-3-3 and that would be great for Khedira since he would be allowed more of a box to box role with Sahin-Alonso taking care of distribution and Khedira getting the the freedom to make deep runs.

Even though Coentrão was unnecessary, he is still a top LB that we have locked up for a long time. All it takes is an injury to realize how valuable that kind of squad depth is.

But what about Altintop who is supposed to be able to play as a backup fullback? What about Arbeloa who is a more than capable backup for the left side of defence? WHAT ABOUT ROYSTON DRENTHE FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a tragedy that Drenthe can't play more often now. At this rate he'll probably win WPOTY next season.

In all seriousness though, Coentrão was expensive but I don't see him as a waste of money like Neymar or Aguero would be.

Well he got his coaching badges when he was eight, so maybe he'll get a managerial position somewhere...

I would almost prefer Neymar or Aguero to Coentrao. We already have Marcelo who just had a super season for us and came out of this year as one of the best left backs in the world. Relative to that it's insane to buy another leftback even if one is to cover the other when the amount is 30M. Leftback is hardly a position where it makes sense to rotate like with attacking players. This tranfer makes no sense.
