He had a sort of a turn-around in his career at Juventus and is unarguably one of the best defenders in the league this season.

Jaime wrote:I guess I meant 'younger' as in not in the twilight of their career. Chiellini is 27 (older than I thought) but still really just entering the prime of his career (for a centre back).

I didn't even know Barzagli came back from Germany! Embarassed

Great question. Even better answer from Kroos

Not just centre backs. They used to produce the best full backs in the world alongside the Brazilians. nowadays, I can't name one who I would put near a top 5

Criscito who plays for us (Zenit) is quality but not top 5.

Chiellini is the successor of the likes of Nesta and Cannavaro although obviously not as good,he's World Class when he's at his best though.

Unfortunately that line is coming to an end. There are some upcoming ones who have shown talent, but who are not really fulfilling their initial promise.

Ranocchia & Bonucci are the ones who are disappointing - they were supposed to be the next Nesta & Cannavaro. I still have hopes that Ranocchia will settle in at Inter, and fulfill his potential.

Others include Astori, Santacroce, & Ogbonna, but even they are not yet living up to the initial promise. Of these, I haven't yet given up on Ogbonna, lets see how he does in Serie A next summer.

The generation after these lads (Caldirola, Capuano, Benedetti, etc) are too young to set any hopes on.

The fact that Chiellini & Barzagli are Italy's starting CBs kinda tells the whole story.

Centre forwards and poachers dried too.

Zero growth native population, latent racism that marginalizes immigrants' sons, tendency of the youngsters to be lazy junkies... there's much less material so it's hard for the academies.

If they're also crap I couldn't say, I barely watch a primavera match a year

Italy has one of the lowest birthrates in the world, iirc it has halved since 1980. That's where all the talent has gone.

Yes they need to start having more babies and get their birth rate back up to 2.0

Spains isn't much better though so it can't be the only excuse.

Apparently 1,4 children born per woman in Italy. On the other hand, in Mali it is 6,35! I guess we'll have plenty of Diarra's in the future! cheers

With so many things going wrong at Inter, the rejuvenation project is almost going unnoticed. Even in all this darkness, there is a ray of light... Inter have slowly acquired some decent young talent in the senior team.

Castaignos (19)
Coutinho* (19) - Guarin (25) - Alvarez (23)
Obi (20) - Poli (22)
Nagatomo (25) - Ranocchia (24) - Juan (20) - Faraoni (20)
Viviano* (26)

That's a team with average age below 22 years! And while the jury is still out on whether Castaignos & Juan are good enough to play for the senior team, the rest have already shown enough talent or already made it in the team.

All this without even considering the primavera talent Inter have invested in during the last few years. We will get some future first teamers coming out of Crisetig, Bessa, Longo, Caldirola*, Alborno, Benedetti*, Spendlhofer, Tassi, etc.

There is some decent work going on, it will just take a few years before we can see any results coming out of such a ambitious youth project. Inter have never spent so much on players so young - we usually focus on players in their prime (25-30) or quality oldies (30+). This is uncharted territory for the club, lets hope its proves worthwhile.

*Players out of loan/co-ownership.

I know. But the idea is that some of these could become special in the future.

Interesting squad selection from Strama, what surprised me most were the two players he has included from his primavera team... Di Gennaro as the 4th GK, and Livaja as the 5th striker in place of Castaignos, who has been sent to the primavera! Interesting, I have a feeling Livaja may even get some minutes... And it takes some balls to include a 4th GK, and leave a fit Palombo behind in your first game as coach...

Inter squad:
1 Julio Cesar, 12 Castellazzi, 21 Orlandoni, 91 Di Gennaro;
4 Zanetti, 6 Lucio, 23 Ranocchia, 25 Samuel, 26 Chivu, 37 Faraoni, 55 Nagatomo;
5 Stankovic, 14 Guarin, 18 Poli, 19 Cambiasso, 20 Obi;
7 Pazzini, 9 Forlan, 22 Milito, 28 Zarate, 88 Livaja

Strama mentioned that his line up will be a transitional team somewhere between Ranieri's team and what he wants his to be. I have a feeling it will be a 4-3-3:

Forlan - Milito - Zarate
Poli - Cambiasso - Stankovic
Chivu - Lucio - Samuel - Zanetti
Cesar

With Guarin and Livaja getting some minutes in the 2nd half...

Its baffling - only Strama can answer that.

Its clearly not for tactical reasons...

Why isn't Van Bommel playing? He hasn't had game time in 2 weeks,who will play in the Camp Nou,VB or Ambrosini?

I knew they would rest Nesta though,they need him to stand a chance against us.I wouldn't be surprised if Aqua is starting because he's playing against us as he possesses more quality than Nocerino.

That was a huge blunder. Catania denied.

Edit: it actually was offside because the touch before came from bergessio who came back from anoffside position.

Abbiati has got to be one the worst distributors of the ball of a goalkeeper. Every pass-back is an aimless hoof forward, even when there are simple short options, complete waste of possession and momentum.

I didn't think we were that bad. Catania deserve credit. 1-1 was fair.

We can't win every single game. That was our toughest game for a few weeks.

The positive: Our players returning from injury got a chance to play this game, and work on some form. Boateng started looking better near the end. Aquilani had an okayish game.

Tough match for Juve tomorrow but they can open the league again with a win against Napoli. Juve's program is harder than Milan's but of their tough games it is only the one next week at Palermo that is away.
