Serie A is the ? best league in Europe

Post by Batman on Tue Aug 23, 2011 7:28 pm

Serie A used to be the best League in Europe but then the Premier League and La Liga over took it and it became the 3rd best in most peoples opinion.

This summer Serie A has three star players from last season:

Eto'o
Pastore
Sanchez

So do you still consider it the 3rd best league in Europe?

Nope...currently the Bundesliga is the 3rd best league. And not just because of the UEFA co-efficient rankings. It may not have the stars like Serie A (Ibra, T. Silva, Sneijder), but the Bundesliga is a league that is more competitive and financially healthy. Expect Ozil to write a diatribe any moment now, so I will leave him to it.

Btw, just to get him started, Bundesliga may well surpass La Liga in rankings as well.

Judging the relative strength of a league by 'big name' players that leave doesn't make much sense IMHO. Serie A problems of the past few year lied elsewhere, but they will be back. Success goes in cycles. Italian football is in a transition.

From the economical standpoint, Serie A is better off than the Spanish League, for example, if you look at the league as a whole and not just the top clubs. The Italian economy is considerably stronger anyway. These factors will have an effect long term.

Yeah good point.

A lot depends on Legge Crimi getting passed. If it does, and clubs own their own stadia in Italy, the revenues will steadily increase. The broadcasting figures are already very good, and the collective TV rights is already in place.

A lot depends on legge crimi.

Thats extremely unlikely in the near future, infact it is far more likely that Serie A will regain its 3rd spot in the next 3-4 years. Here is why (I worte this article analysing the future of UEFA rankings):

But overall, I agree with you. Bundesliga may not have the stars of Serie A or La Liga, but they have a better overall model in place.

That's not likely because the strength of the league is built on the domestic talent the clubs produce themselves, and will continue to do so for years to come. Since the introduction of the Bundesliga in 1963 and an initial period in which German clubs needed to become competitive, the Bundesliga has been amongst the top three leagues in the UEFA ranking for most of the history. The reason being exactly that, the depth of domestic talent in Europe's biggest country, the backbone of the league.

The late 90s / 00s period was the exception, for various often discussed reasons. The economical fundamentals only speak for a prospering and improving league, too.

P.S.: You seem to believe that once Germany has 7 teams starting, things will turn in favour of the Serie A. You have to realise that in 2009, for example, Germany had as many teams in Europe as the Serie A, yet Bundesliga clubs still outperformed their Italian counterparts by a considerable margin.
