*Are Newcastle genuine Champions League contenders?
Winning when not playing at your best is a common trait among teams in the top four and Newcastle seem to have adopted the attribute. The Magpies' fluency has been disrupted in the past month by African Cup of Nations absence, injury and suspension, but two wins in a week has seem them maintain their challenge for fourth place.

What must please Alan Pardew the most is seeing squad players take on the challenge of replacing first-team regulars. The wins against Blackburn and Villa were in no small part down to the performances of the much-improved Danny Guthrie. The midfielder buzzed in both games, committed in his defensive duties and excellent when in possession. A key area in which Newcastle have been lacking, despite the brilliant season they're having, is competition for places, but Guthrie's impressive form and the signing of Papiss Cisse has gone a long way to address that.

Cisse looked as though he'd been playing in the Premier League for a decade when he made his debut against Villa. His workrate was exceptional, he wasn't fazed by the imposing physicality (to put it politely) of Richard Dunne and he took his goal wonderfully; patiently controlling the pass instead of swiping at it first time. With the striker looking immediately settled, and Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote soon to return, Newcastle must now focus their attention on the one-point gap between themselves and Chelsea.

They have a fantastic opportunity to fight for, while teams around them are perhaps still struggling with the fact that it's only the start of February and they're already out of the title race. Next Saturday's fixture at Tottenham is a test to see how far the Magpies have come.

We won't be beating Spurs with this midfield. But it is Wolves and then Sunderland both at home next, that should be 6 points.

Sunderland will be a toughie with their resurgence under The Disgrace. Sessegnon, McClean and Frazier Campbell are a real danger.

Stoke isn't the easiest place to go though. They got lucky there but they lost at Chelsea where they were unlucky.

I still fancy you to win just but it'll be close.

I am used to Sunderland coming into the Derby full of confidence. Anyway they could easily lose their next 2 games, Arsenal at home and WBA away. It's amusing watching them talk about how if they had MON since the start of the season they could be top 4, this shit is just temporary.

Good for both <Ale>

http://www.nufc.co.uk/articles/20120307/newcastle-receive-fa-charge_2281670_2639628

Newcastle United and Sunderland have both been charged with misconduct by the Football Association following the match between the two sides on Sunday, 4th March, 2012.

The charge is that the clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour, and is in relation to an incident which occurred in the 19th minute following a challenge by Sunderland's James McClean on Newcastle's Danny Simpson.

Both clubs have until 4pm on 12th March, 2012, to respond to the charge.

I hope O'Neill gets charged for his conduct aswell. You can't accuse a club of colluding with the ref with no basis and get away with it.

Doesn't look like Ba is too happy Kimbo and Bash. I always thought this though. The change to 433 was always going to affect him the most. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the summer.

Tis a shame, maybe the hype went to his head. He is on to a good thing here, he shouldn't mess it up.

Ba 'will come out fighting'
Newcastle manager backs striker to return to form
Last Updated: April 10, 2012 2:37pm

Alan Pardew has admitted being happy with Demba Ba's angry reaction to being substituted during the victory over Bolton.

The striker, who has not netted in nine games, refused to shake the Newcastle manager's hand after being withdrawn in the 64th minute.

But Pardew says he was heartened by the Senegal international's frustration at being replaced.

"Demba was upset when I brought him off," Pardew told the Shields Gazette.

"I was trying to get a reaction from him, if I'm honest. I want him to be angry and fight. He'll come out fighting. I know Demba, and I've got no worries about him."
Newcastle face Stoke City at St James' Park on 21st April and Pardew is backing his striker to end his barren run against the side that pulled out of a deal to sign him last year.

"It wasn't Demba's day, but it might be in two weeks' time," he continued.

"Ba, Shola[Ameobi], Papiss [Cisse] and Hatem[Ben Arfa] all have massive roles to play for us between now and the end of the season."

I think it is difficult to determine at the moment whether Ba is genuinely disenchanted or whether he's just frustrated with his form and over his lack of goals.

There are a number of issues. We didn't play with a 4-3-3 yesterday and in general have only begun using the formation recently - it isn't as though we have used it since Cisse arrived, but we've moved to it in the course of Ben Arfa winning his place in the team; and perhaps also partly because Cisse and Ba don't seem to link particularly well when they play together in a front two. I don't think Ba is the perfect target man given that he isn't the strongest and doesn't hold the ball up well, but in a front two alongside Cisse, who seems more of a natural goalscorer in so far as he's a very clinical finisher and moves easily into goalscoring positions, Ba seems to lack a clear role and purpose. In this respect I think Ba has actually benefited from the 4-3-3 because it has tended to involve him more in our build-up play - up until the last few games, in which he's begun to look especially tired, Ba wasn't scoring but he was playing a key role in a number of the goals which Cisse was ultimately finishing off. Still, perhaps Ba does feel sidelined, perhaps he does feel that the 4-3-3 minimises his chances of scoring.

Off the pitch, there is the issue of who we sell in the summer. I don't think we will see a mass exodus, but I think we will sell at least one of our more prized players, and I think the one we will actively look to sell is Tiote. Obviously who we end up selling will depend on the type of bids we receive. I don't think we will be desperate to offload any of our key attacking players, but Cisse's form and Ba's lack of goals since Cisse's arrival make the potential sale of Ba much more complex than it may have seemed in January. Who is going to pay the money, whether in terms of a big transfer fee or a big signing on fee plus wages, for a player who hasn't scored well for half a season, who has an underlying issue with his knee, and who comes from a club which possesses in Cisse a player who in the same period of time has been scoring at a hugely impressive rate? If Ba was looking for a big money move in the summer, then I think the past few months have certainly hampered his chances in several ways.

It is frequently remarkable to me how easily displeased so many footballers seem to be. Ba has been playing well for us without scoring for the majority of the games since Cisse's arrival, and our form has been good and morale is high within the team, our attendances are excellent, and we are in a great position towards earning European football of some sort next season. At this precise point in time I think there is little reason for anyone in our squad to want away.

The Daily Telegraph claim that Newcastle have already agreed a 5m deal for FC Twente centre-back Douglas while Erick Pieters from PSV Eindhoven is their preferred choice at left-back.

Grr If true, I see this being another coup for Newcastle in the transfer market. Looks an excellent prospect, noticed him stand out in the games I've seen when Twente played us last season and Fulham this.
