Excellent slaying of Daily mail columnist Charles Sale on F365 today. What a plank:

Conscience For Sale
Mediawatching as we do, we're not often amazed by things written in the papers. Indeed, it takes even less to shock us in The Daily Mail.

However, we were left gawping after reading the lead item in Charles Sale's column today, which began:

'UEFA president Michel Platini sidestepped the huge embarrassment of witnessing the missed goal blunder by his preferred additional assistant referees by not turning up to the England game against Ukraine...

'So Platini was not there to see hapless Hungarian assistant Ivan Vad somehow miss spotting Marko Devic's shot clearly crossing the line for what should have been a Ukraine equaliser before the ball was hooked clear by John Terry - the best possible advertisement for the goal-line technology so opposed by the UEFA overlord.'

So far, so sniffy. Nothing to get worked up about there, one might think.

However, here's why Platini wasn't at the game:

'But Platini changed his itinerary to go to Poznan for Italy v Republic of Ireland, because he had not been to the venue, and then to France for the funeral of close friend Thierry Roland, a veteran French TV football commentator.'

So Platini the 'overlord' apparently 'sidestepped' the issue by going to the funeral of a 'close friend'.

Good lord Charles. Is nothing beyond your haughty bullsh*t? Is attending the funeral of a close friend not a good enough excuse for missing a football game just because something that opposed his policy happened? And the death of a friend isn't enough for you to lay off making a pi*sy comment and trying to score a cheap point?

Truly, truly extraordinary.

Sadly, this is the danger when the tabloid media go for Pariah's like Platini. Tossers

No-one talking about the match tonight?

I'm hopeful it should be an entertaining one - two outside bets, with a SF place up for grabs. Portugal have grown into the tournament somewhat & were impressive going forward against Holland - should've scored several more. They also seem pretty strong defensively (as proven by them mostly frustrating Germany) so they will be favourites.

But Czech have already snuck under the radar in qualifying (even in their weak group, nobody was picking them ahead of Poland/Russia). Pilar is quality and along with Jiracek & Rosicky (if fit) they got some quality in midfield. Defence has to be questioned - Russia cut them open with ease. They did make a change & tighten up since then but I'm still not convinced by their CBs.

Both clubs saddled with a lame duck up front so that cancels out. It'll most likely be about whether Ronaldo/Nani can outproduce Pilar/Jiracek.

I'm not sure why the manager continues to pick Baros over Pekhart or Necid scratch

And tends to wait til the last few mins to sub Baros.. No, it's pretty weird. Baros is one of those players whose limitations become all the more obvious the older he gets. Offered absolutely nothing this tournament, where a few yrs ago, he at least hung on defenders shoulders and put them under a bit of pressure.

While Postiga is also uninspiring, I suppose we should be glad Portugal finally moved on from Nuno Gomes, who was about like Baros is now as the last Euros.

Czech and Portugal played in the groups in 2008 and Portugal won 3-1. Not too many players remaining from those lineups - Ronaldo, Moutinho, Pepe from Portugal, Baros, Cech, Plasil from the Czechs.

Tonight and tomorrow's games are a bit dull on paper sadly; Portugal might find it a slight struggle but will win, Germany will wipe the floor with Greece.

The first thing to be advertised by my country's tourism office should be "65% of the >40 y.o. population understands English" Very Happy
Know that if you are learning Portuguese specifically to go to Brasil (the "s", i know Razz ) you should probably learn with a Brasilian teacher. Their accent is pretty specific. Unless you visit Scolary's state Laughing

As for the game tonight i'll say Portugal has a 60% chance, they can't afford the slightest mistake because i think the Czechs defend very well. I also fear they might be physically hard on Nany and Ronaldo.

Oh, by the way, almost forgot :

Platini, vá te faire !!!

Who knows? Knockout games can bring all kinds of surprises Magic

The Greeks could 1-0 the Germs as they did in to Portugal, France and co in 2004. Czechs can go back to the good old days of being the official Dark Horse for every tournament Very Happy

(man, just looking back at 2004, weird tournament. Besides Greece you had Latvia KO-ing Germany, England the highest scoring side, Italy/Germany/Spain all out in the groups..)

Greece have a date with destiny and their game against Germany may be their "Final". What an opportunity for the Greeks to go to War against the country that has raped them financially. All the Greeks's wealth stolen by German bankers. The economic resources and the future of their children...shamelessly taken by sociopaths from Germany!

Greece's game against Germany may unite their country even more than the Euro 2004 Final which they won.

Germany have the stronger team, and not only that, but this tournament was designed for them to win it. All their nemesis were placed far away from them and could only meet them very late in the competition (España, Italia, France) with only Italia getting a crack at them in the semifinals (provided Italia KO's England).

Watch them refs! Germany will have the refs help them like España and the Dutchies were massively helped in WC 2010 in the KO stages.

The Greeks are HUGE underdogs. They struggle against Germany. All of that doesn't matter tomorrow. They will have to beat Germany and the ref! THEY MUST BELIEVE THEY CAN DO IT!

Greece! this is your only shot! <Ale>

Yeah, but since then there was a Portugal 3 x 1 Czech Republic.... The funniest thing was the reporters asking Moutinho about that game and he was so young he didn't remember it Very Happy

Pauleta & Nuno Gomes were above Postiga back then - he only featured vs England. But yep. It is eerie. 'specially with return of Greece

Baros - made the right run there, just couldn't reach it..close. Czech started slightly the brighter.

Wow I thought Postiga played in the group stages. Either way, always remember his penalty against England (sorry).

Nearly a breakthrough for Ronaldo. Too strong for his own good.

Interesting start - both teams fairly equal. Just get the feeling that Czech lack a bit of quality, which may tell as they tire. Portugal seem to still be playing within themselves...no real intent in their attacks.

Ronaldo in an interesting position - centre/right-centre, dropping into the pocket of space between Czech's defence and midfield lines, and hence finding a few extra yards of space to accelerate.

There is a lot of movement by Portugal central midfielders to cover for him, as he doesn't track Gebre Selassie runs. Which is a risk for both sides - Portugal can be late with picking up Czech RB and Czech NT also have to make sure that Ronaldo is picked up by central defenders, when he's trying to use space Selassie leaves behind.

Disappointing 1st half. Neither team going truly on the attack. Both a bit conservative considering it's a knockout game.

Both a bit conservative because it's a knockout game. You don't want to lose it in the 1st half.

Portugal definitely on top at the end, Czech needed half time badly.

Ronaldo will be bashed if he was a striker like Ibra, but because he plays in obscure positions (wide-forward, inside-right forward or what not), he's praised for missing lot of chances.

Portugal getting on top towards the end there but other than that it has been pretty even,Cristina is troubling the Czechs by moving into central positions and using his pace in behind.Coentrao has been brilliant and Pepe is continuing his form that has made him the best CB in the tournament so far.Don't count the Czechs out though,Barsos might be a runner but they have 2 fantastic wide players with pace in Jiracek and Pilar,Jiracek kind of reminds me of Ramires tbh.
