Interesting statistic,the decade of dominance

Post by Jason Jarrett on Thu Sep 06, 2012 8:42 am

Never mind their national team,or the fact that their youth teams win trophies for fun,or the fact that their footballers can succeed in Serie A,EPL,Bundesliga,Ligue 1 etc, here's another stat highlighting the success of Spanish football

Success in UEFA Club Competitions 2002-2012:

La Liga 16 trophies(4 x champions Leagues,5 x UEFA Cups,7 x Super Cups)
Serie A 5 trophies(3 Champions Leagues,2 x SUper Cup)
EPL 4 trophies(3 x Champions League,1 x Super Cup)

As for The Bundesliga, they are tied with the Faroe Islands and Malta on zero.

The question is,which country can match Spanish football's success in this golden period?

I know some people believe in the whole "best league in the world" debate between La Liga,Bundesliga,Serie A,EPL and whatever, personally I don't as all 4 have their own unique features, pro's and cons, strengths and weaknesses, flaws and strong points, but this stat is a strong statement for Spanish football.

There is obvious problems with those stats and they assume that winning Cl or Europa League/Uefa cup is the only indicator of league strength. Not to mention that 7 of Spain's trophies consist of Super Cups which is a 1 match game and has little meaning imo. Then you add that Spain's only finalist in the last couple of years has been Barcelona. In contrast England has had all 4 of their big teams in the final in recent time with 3/4 winning.
In England and Italy the Europa League simply has not been treated with the needed respect for it to be a worthy gauge of anything. Then you have to actually watch the games in each league and different perspective emerges of the "quality" of the Spanish league for example.

I do think Germany will improve because of their economic situation and the growing talent mass but at the same time the loss of German mental attributes should counted as well since has proven, imo, not merely to be cafe talk but proveable by recent results. Dortmund's performance this year might indicate if we are simply reversing to the situation from after 2002 where it was just Bayern.

I didn't say it meant in any way, shape or form that La Liga is the "best league in the world",personally I don't believe in the whole "best league in the world" thing. What I was getting at was they are winning trophies by the bucket full at club, youth and senior national team level.

One of the 2 European clubs I support are Italian,so I am aware that the Europa League doesn't have a strong interest int hat country, but at the end of the day,a trophy is a trophy, ambitious teams try to win all the competitions they play in.

Ya Germany will improve,Dortmund and Schalke are getting stronger.

As for the whole semi and QF teams,is anybody going to remember them in 20 years time?No only the winners, maybe runner-ups.Its like the guy who finishes 4th or 5th at an event @ the Olympics

But lets face it,who else has ever had so much success at club level, youth level and senior level at the same time??.It is a decent effort.

what do you mean? bayern showed in the CL everything of what a german supporter could be proud of, pure will to destroy every opponent to reach the final at home, we dominanted madrid on there own pitch, after the equalizer from chelsea bayern didn`t collpased, after the missed robben penalty (stupid dutch) we still attacked them and wanted the win even more

the age is on the german side, while we gain more experience, other nations just get old, in the same time we will reach the peak, not just bayern, many other clubs aswell, and of course die Mannschaft

super doesnt know what he is talking about he just has a need to try and justify his reactionary views on the game and grabs at every little straw as well as constantly moving the goal post every passing day to try and prove his point despite most of the facts showin that proactive football is the way to go in modern football, so every once in a while when a proactive team loses he jumps up and say ah and when a team like A.M/ital, who in very few ways plays the way he sees the game he drags them into his

Since when do making QF and SF mark success?Juve vs Man United 1999 apart,Who even remembers the semi-finalists from 1990-1999??You only remember the finalists....

But its good news for Maltese football that they are on par with the Bundesliga

Super cup & Europa league stats doesn't wash with me. English teams consider latter as a reserve league. Former is one-off.

the truly shock-horror stat that should bother the English:

La Liga 64.3%
Ligue 1 62.7%
Serie A 52.1%
Bundesliga 45.0%
Premier League 31.6%
.
