So good old Pepito Guardiola can't keep his mouth shut on his sabbatical year in NYC and comes out saying that he would vote for an independent Cataluña. Laughing

How would this team fair in the WCQ?????

---------------Busquets

---------Xavi-----------Cesc

Cuenca----------Bojan-----------Tello

Subs: Casilla, Oleguer, Muniesa Laughing, Capdevila, Verdu, Tamudo

verdu in midfield, cesc as false 9, roberto,d.villa, gerard and bartra on the bench, for a place so small relativity speaking its a crazy good team.

--------------VV

--Montoy--Pique--Ramos---Alba

-----------busquets

----Xavi-------------Verdu

---Cuenca-----Cesc----Tello

Bartra,Capdevilla,S.Roberto,Bojan,Gerard,Amat,Vila,garcia

spain have a better attack but thats it. so the will go one step further than spain.
busquets>javi,xavi>alonso,iniesta>verdu.

how could I have forgotten V.ruis.
bench:casilla,didac vila,ruiz,bartra,romeu,roberto,garcia,bojan,gerard.
that team plus this bench could win the WC. they are as good as any team in defense and better than all in midfield, the front 3 is good but not great, but add gerard two years from now with cesc and cuenca it starts to look great in all departments.

That team is pretty "sick" (as the kids say).

I must admit, I'm not well read up on the full pool of talent in Catalunya, so have no idea about squad depth.

But considering an almost completely Basque team schooled Man United in the Europa League last season, I imagine each and every one of the regions of Spain are now at a level when they can compete, and beat, the majority of international teams.

One thing is for certain. They'd be higher ranked and more successful than Peru. (Or Per-who? as I like to call them)

This is an interesting idea. Several of the autonmous regions do have faux national teams that play friendlies every now and again. Asutrias would be pretty decent:

-----------------Esteban

J. Venta-----Sergio-----Paredes-----Canella

-------------Michel-----Cazorla

Adrian-------------Michu-------------Mata

-------------------Villa

Madrid could play with:

--------------------Casillas

M. Torres-----Cuellar-----Dominguez-----B. Gomez

--------------M. Suarez-----Gabi

Granero-------------Valero------------Koke

-------------------F. Torres

mata, soldado and torres decent at best

villa is good

midfield is fine, but far to lightweight (your record about no conceded goals in the KO stage would be gone), and without the barca influence and blind understanding of them, spain would be nothing special

Spain have talent coming out of their fucking ears.

Their 3rd/4th team would compete and probably beat almost everyone else, bar perhaps Brazil.

No, I'm not exagerating.

Iniesta is from Castilla la Mancha...

The Canary Islands would have a decent team too Silva, Pedro, Valeron, etc.

Here are a couple more teams:

Valencia

------------------Palop

Juanfran-----Albiol-----Ballesteros-----J. Enrique

---------------Albelda-----Bruno

Femenia-------------Pablo H.-------------Gavilan

---------------------Soldado

Andalusia

-------------------J. Varas

Gamez------S. Ramos-----Marchena-----Cisma

----------Camacho-----Jurado

Callejon--------Isco--------Reyes

----------------Guiza

Regarding the catalan Golden Generation....Puyol is already on his last leg. Xavi I don't think will actually make it to 2014....after they retire they will basically just have Bojan left. And VALDES SELECCION.

It's nonsense. First of all that Catalunatic team aint that strong. Basically everyone from the current Dutch team is born withing 20km of Rotterdam. Should we get independence as well now?

Cataluns need to realise that competition is making them stronger, without Madrid, competition is none, also there would be a lot less money available. So in a few years from now, it would be exactly from the same quality as other small countries.

What if we would all think like Cataluns? Europe would be looking something like this!

Now it's nice for the Germans, so they might be able to finally win something, though Bayern should be on it's own as well, and Italy still looks too big. But imagine how much Puro will moan about the Euro shite spots for the WC! Have the Cataluns thought about that? I doubt it.

You're making it sound like they are calling for independence because they want to have their own football team. Very Happy
However even if they do get indepence it doesn't have to follow that they get their own team but I suspect they will want to do this but they will surely not pull out of the Spanish league so who cares?

Pull out of the spanish league? F*ck that they should be kicked out. They can have fun with Nastic and Sabadell and Figueres and l'Hospitalet and maybe they can see if the andorran clubs want to join them. Espanyol can stay though.

Jaime,

Doesn't it depend on the borders of Cataluna? King Jaume I of Catalunya ruled an enormous swathe of modern-day Spain reaching the borders of Alfonso X el Sabio's Kingdom (Murcia and parts of Andalusia). Jaume's domain had Valencia as his capital, so arguably the Catalans can claim Valencia and Levante and Hercules, Elche, Vilareal, Castellon can be included. I'm sure there are others too.

Never existed King Jaume I of Catalunya.
First Cataluña never was a kingdom. Cataluña belonged to the Kingdom of Aragon.
The king was King Jaime I of Aragon.
Cataluña was never independent country or state. They want freedom but were never independent. They never were conquered or invaded by nobody like Ireland or Scotland.
So its a stranger type of freedom they proclaim.

Sorry for my bad English.

James I
King of Aragon, Valencia, and Majorca, Count of Barcelona, and Lord of Montpellier

From wikipedia

The Catalans refer to him by the name of James I the Conqueror and are very fond about him.

I think it depends on who you talk to.

http://www.barcelona-tourist-information.info/catalan-aragonese-empire.html

Of course they would say that, but the fact that the Catalan language was originally spoken in parts of empire is interesting. Question is what did he see himself as. Wouldn't Aragon have called him Jaime. Why is he known as Jaume I el Conquerador?

http://www.barcelona-tourist-information.info/jaume-I.html

This suggests that there were distinct parts of the Kingdom(s) and empire and that some at least saw it as a joint empire. I understand that they would say that, but it still raises the issue as do these:

http://www.alcudiamallorca.com/en/alcudia/the-conquest-by-king-jaume-i-creation-of-the-kingdom-of-mallorca-(year-1229).html

http://press.princeton.edu/titles/8407.html

http://www.racba.org/en/mostrarobra2.php?id=23019

The latter article refers to him as king of Catalunya and Aragon. I'm not saying that the perception is right, but plainly there is one that he was King of Catalunya as well as Aragon and he acquired more Kingdoms including Valencia.
Even the Wikipedia article referes to him as both Jaume and Jaime, so it depends on your prespective.

Meh. Doesn't really matter what the catalans may or may not "claim" from hundreds of years ago. Valencia wouldn't want to be a part of an independent Cataluña.

I fully agree. There is no question that the people of Valencia do not see themselves as Catalans, but they too have a distinct language. Barcelona's failure to win several La Liga titles stems from Jaume I having the damn cheek to besiege the city for 16 years (bastard) and conquer it (unforgiveable). Definitely due a curse for that despite making it his capital and that is why Barca were forbidden from winning several titles, but if he was King of Aragon alone we'll have to reconsider that curse and damn other teams too Wink
