Godfrey Chitalu

He deserves his own thread damnit!

Yesterday I met the researcher who discovered the proof regarding Chitalu's record. I had a long interview with him and with former Zambia captain Emmie Musonda, who has an interesting story too. Musonda was involved in a bad accident that affected his memory at the time, but he is better now. That accident saved his life. He was one of Zambia's coaches. But for it he would have died in the Gabon crash. He wants to get back into football. There is nothing to help old players in Zambia. It's badly needed. He played against Chitalu and with him and rates him very highly.

It's worth noting that there were other talented strikers in Zambia at that time, but they were nowhere near Chitalu. He was about 40 goals ahead of the next best in that season and it was no fluke. In 1968 he got 81 goals. Respect is due.

Chitalu plainly had the record twice, breaking his own 1968 record four years later. Nobody denies the achievements of Leonidas da Silva for example, which occurred before football was routinely televised. Why is this nonsense reserved for Chitalu? He deserves proper respect. There have been other great Zambian players - Kalusha Bwalya for example. If it is such a crap league and defence at the time, why was the nearest challenger over 50 behind him? Why has nobody come close to the great Ucar? It does not detract from Messi's skill and achievements to acknowledge that Godfrey Ucar Chitalu deservedly holds the record.
