blutgraetsche wrote:I wouldn't say that I "support" Bayern though. But it's true that many Germans want to see German clubs do well in Europe,  even rival clubs. At the end of the day,  it's to the benefit of the league and hence their own clubs,  as those UEFA coefficient points determine the number of CL and EL places the league has.

Another reason,  probably the more important one,  is mentality. In Germany,  clubs are of course important,  but there is a sense of "responsibility" for the bigger picture,  for German football as a whole,  the national team in particular,  which has a very important standing,  in contrast to England,  for example,  where the league is a lot more powerful and important and couldn't care less about their national team.

I'm not just a Werder supporter,  I also support the national team and hence have a strong interest in German internationals doing well. Bayern tend to hoard a good number of the best ones,  unfortunately. I'd like to see them spread more evenly amongst Bundesliga clubs,  but what can you do,  that's modern football.

I understand, and it makes sense. But it doesn't happen in Brazil. Here, your club comes high above the national team and national football. If Atlético play against Bayern in December, all their Brazilian rivals will support Bayern for sure.

If a local team from São Paulo, for instance, is playing against a foreign team and the foreign team scores in a Libertadores game, you hear firecracks in the sky as if a local team had scored (firecracks of the rivals, obviously).

When Corinthians played against Boca last year in the final, many rival groups met in bars to watch the game and cheer for Boca.

If you ask Brazilian football fans to choose between their club winning Libertadores (or even the Brazilian league) and Brazil winning the WC, I'm sure the great majoroty would choose the club (me included).

Ale Bizarre slurs and all a little too obvious. At least one Werder-supporting friend of mine really got on my tits with her cringeworthy jumping on the Bayern bandwagon, even went to the final (she has an irrational hatred of Dortmund) but everyone was supporting Bayern in Europe (even if their preferred English team was Arsenal), if obviously not in the final.

Those are the basic rules (todo), you're allowed to support Bayern in Europe, even if you never would at the national level. Could even consider supporting HSV in Europe if it were relevant. I don't know anyone who goes as far as not to support Bayern internationally.

(For instance, I remember Michael Stich on the BBC Wimbledon coverage some years ago – when he mentioned he was an 1860 fan, one of the others asked "Ah, so you would have been supporting United in '99?" – he hastily replied "Er no, I don't go that far...)

– at least in real life, that is – online is of course a different matter, as one sees every day... Erm

Let me get this clear though: Not all Germans think this way, there are quite a few who don't. Especially as far as the fiercest rivalries are concerned, e.g. Dortmund - Schalke, they are probably the majority even (the worst that could have happened to a Schalke fan was Dortmund winning the CL). There is the jealousy factor and other things like pure hatred that are rather irrational.

But generally speaking, many (not all) Germans prefer Bundesliga clubs to do well in Europe, for the reasons explained.

In Perú the majority casually support the Peruvian club in the Libertadores even though they may be a rival club. There's a vocal minority who go against the Peruvian club and they are shouted down "STFU you Argie c**t!" for they are viewed as wannabe Argies since the real Argies WILL support whoever are playing against their rivals in the Libertadores.

Perhaps Brasileiros are wannabe Argies? Biggrin <Ale>

The same goes here. A few Brazilians would support a rival club because they are Brazilian, but just a few.

Guess that this could be pretty much Bayern first team this season. Schweinsteiger as DM, Müller up front.

Müller the one man pressing machine.

Robben has actually gotten even better than last season, even less selfish and improved decision making.

Again Bayern dominating the match, pressing like Pep's Barcelona in their best days,  not giving City air to breathe. But still lacking the killer instinct,  still too wasteful,  still not as penetrative as they could be.

Müller's pressing and movement is awesome,  but I'm really not sure if he works as #9, false or not.

Müller is SHITE up front but that's NOT his position. I've seen enough of Bayern and Pep must play this which is the strongest XI without tinkering too much too soon.

Pep doesn't know it yet but give him some time and he WILL see that Luis Gustavo is better than Schweinsteiger playing right next to Martínez. Luis Gustavo is a natural left footer and WILL fit in in Pep's team like a dream. TFS!!!<Ale> <Ale> <Ale>

Bayern took the lead, Mandzukic scoring after a great cross by Müller. Maybe playing a real #9 isn't such a bad idea Pep?

Bayern win, but Pep has a lot of work to do. Bayern are looking too vulnerable on the break, they lack balance. So far, I can't see an improvement over last season, on the contrary.

Pizarro is not bad, but at 35 he's going to be on the bench for most games. He might even be the backup to the backup.

I am pretty sure that even if pep hadn't been taking the team for training sessions, he'd know better than our resident inca-net warrior.

Also no Muller? He'd be one of the first names down, unless he was being given a rest after straining something during one of his awesome goal celebrations.

It's total nonsense anyway. Puro getting carried away as usual.

No Müller, no titles. He was one of Bayern's best players last season and is winning mentality incarnate.

Pep needs to find the right balance. If he wants to stick to his 4-1-4-1 system, Bayern have to improve their stamina as the relentless pressing as shown in the first half is necessary to retain stability - they have to keep it up for 90 minutes if necessary. Plus, they need to use their chances better. Bayern are even more dominant this way, but they need to score more goals to make it worth.

hmm i think the first half was very good, city has done a chelsea, but we still created some really good scoring moments

Müller is no central striker, he is a 2nd striker or on the right wing (he created the winner on the right, says it all)

Martinez is way to slow to be a centre back, he would be great as CB for must sides, but not with our high line defending (or he is just not fit enough, we will see), it`s like merte for arsenal Very Happy

2nd half performance was weak, but we played almost with the same line up as the day before, while city had several new players on the field

thiago is useless, don`t like him

MM has to play, or we have to pray that götze will make a fine false 9

best line up after pre season insights:

----------------Neuer
lahm--boa------dante----alaba
--------martinez
--schweinsteiger-----kroos
robben/müller----mm/götze------ribery

bench:
thiago
shaquiri

it`s obvious that pep likes midfielders and not attacking midfielders in the central midfield, thats why he packed lahm very often in the midfield

Müller is SHITE as a striker, full stop! I'm not taking that back, blut.

And, I said earlier that it wasn't his fault. He was playing where Pep put him. Müller's position is on the right at best and 15 to 20 yards behind the "9" at worst. TFS!<Ale>

The lineup for Bayern I posted earlier is also Bayern's best XI. I would even play Luis Gustavo next to Martínez and challenge any other teams other posters come up.

Müller is UNTESTED as striker. Of course he isn't as effective there, how could he be? The problem is that the team has to realise that it makes a difference if you play with a 'real' #9 and a 'false' #9. It makes no sense to put in 50 crosses like Bayern did yesterday if there is no-one there to convert them.

Müller is great at creating space. He could do that up front also, but the other attacking players of Bayern have to exploit that space. Bayern basically have to play a different style of attacking game.

If Pep manages to implement a proper 'strikerless' system (not necessarily with Müller), he'd have another weapon in his arsenal. He already knows that the 'real' #9 up front (Mandzukic, Pizarro, whoever) works, and works well.

It's all about experimenting. Pep is so ridiculously ambitious (and vain) that he seriously wants to replicate Heynckes success in his first year. Not just that, but being even more dominant and unpredictable while doing so. But there is still some work to do.

Götze to the rescue. Götze the door opener, the player for the Iniesta like moments of genius.

But he first has to get fit and get used to the team, that will take a while.

The delusion of the British press really is astonishing. The 'Mirror' reports that if Man United fail to sign Cesc, they'll go for Bastian Schweinsteiger instead as their 'plan B', offering €30m.

It's the 5th of August and Man United are seriously, seriously considering one of the most important players of the current CL holders, born and bread in Bavaria, as a target to fill their gap in central midfield that has been there for for ages? The same club that beat them to the Thiago transfer? And not only that, Schweinsteiger as 'plan B' even?

One can only hope that it's just media rubbish and that the Man United management is smarter than that. If not, I'd get rather nervous as a Man United fan.
