Re: 2013/14 UEFA Europa League

Post by blutgraetsche on Fri Oct 25, 2013 8:36 am

I don't really blame Freiburg much, for that particular reason. European football is great for the fans, but clubs like Freiburg simply can't handle the extra burden of mid-week matches, their squads are too thin and they lose key players every year. European football can be even dangerous for these clubs, because the competitive Bundesliga is unforgiving, so they often end up in the relegation struggle in seasons like this.

The blame is on traditional Bundesliga powerhouses like Werder, HSV or Stuttgart who have fallen behind in recent years for various reasons. In normal times, these clubs have the resources to compete on both fronts, but better run small clubs like Freiburg have rightfully overtaken them in the league. Those clubs need to modernise their approach, and improve their structures. Because in the long run, the Bundesliga does need them.

And I blame Gladbach for not qualifying for the Europa League to begin with, that was truly inexcusable. Like Gladbach, Frankfurt are another traditional Bundesliga powerhouse re-emerging from the ashes, but they've been a lot more professional in their first European season after God knows how long.

Frankfurt did a good job on keeping most of their players and Veh. The latter was about to leave or not extend his (traditional) 1 year contract.

I'm torn between enjoying teams like Freiburg, Nürnberg or Mainz getting sth out of their good work and qualifying for international cups, but on the other hand they are quiet bad and boring to watch.
Best seasons were with a strong HSV, Werder or even Hannover.

at least there are signs that it will be very clear who will qualify for the cl (bayern, leverkusen, dortmund, schalke) in terms of quality they are well ahead of the rest

this would be very helpful to stay competetive in the cl

gladbach and frankfurt have continuity at the trainer section, and they have some awesome players too, and a great football style, i never wanna see HSV in europe, it would be a disaster Very Happy

but i see it already coming, next year we will have Hertha bsc in the EL Crying or Very sad

Stability is important, true. Made a mistake earlier, meant Stuttgart actually instead of Gladbach.

Don't think that Hertha will be able to keep it up until the end of the season though.

CL:
Bayern, Dortmund, Leverkusen, Schalke

EL:
Gladbach, Frankfurt (if they make it again) and one of Werder, Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg, Hannover or Stuttgart

That is probably the strongest lineup the Bundesliga has to offer currently.

I've got an Erik Lamela looking at that group table.

Means we have won the group with 2 games to spare, so less chance for these piffling group games to disrupt the team for the weekend.

DOMINATION.

How's the Bundesliga's assault on the continent going so far?

Serie A has overtaken Bundesliga for this year:

Should be interesting considering Fiorentina are taking EL very seriously.

Das ist gut... I like Serie A, and, seeing as they won't overcome the Bundesliga's elect any time soon, I want as many Italian teams as possible.

I still expect every German team to qualify (minus Freiburg) from their groups, so we should be right up there with England & Spain by the end...

Agree.

At this stage Italy's priority is to keep Portugal and France at a distance.

Beating Dnipro away is not easy, especially if you take into account the weather during that game.

Anyway, remember Italian teams have gone out to the likes of Thun, so this is welcome.

Andros Townsend really does have the lot.

He is capable of running quickly.

He is not afraid to shoot.

And unlike most young players who break into the first team, he doesn't show off by working hard, tracking back or passing to any of his teammates.

A breath of fresh air. I'm so pleased that Hodgson has decided to make him an England fixture.

Leave Townsend-Lennon-Chamberlain alone. He's the best player in world football (based on 2 games).

Oh look, all Liverpool fans on a European football thread. How cute.

Remind me again what the fuck your club is contributing to the EPL coefficient points? So when you finish 4-6th you can have those glory nights back ay Anfield.

Glennda was on here getting all self righteous when Harry Redknapp was undervaluing the Europa.

Spurs winning all 5 of their games so far to finish top of the group, and now you want to talk about Andros Townsend being shit. Obviously none of you were creaming yourselves over Raheem Sterling last year either right?

Silly c**ts Ale

Top of the group, already qualified, haven't dropped a point, and AVB is still playing this team despite having Liverpool on Sunday:

Friedel
Naughton, Capoue, Fryers, Rose
Dembele Holtby
Lamela Sigurdsson Townsend
Soldado

The days of Glenn moaning about Spurs taking this competition lightly feel a very long way away

a) when have I moaned about Spuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurs not taking the competition seriously?

and

2) if I were complaining about Spuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurs not taking the competition seriously, that 'team' wouldn't be close to shutting me up. Possibly Dembele, Holtby and if fit Rose are first choice.

The amount AVB has rotated, that entire front 5 could be deemed first choice.

1) Front 5?

and

c) I expect Paulinho, Lennon, Defoe and Chadli might have something to say about that. Given that they started the last two EPL games, which Spuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurs won. I would like you to apologise for this flimsy waste of my time.

Assuming Dembele is holding, the 5 attacking players.

Soldado has started more games this season than Defoe.
Townsend has started more games this season than Chadli.
Sigurdsson has started more games this season than Lennon.

Silly Glennda. Very silly Glennda.

Come on! I thought you followed football.

Soldado has started more games this season than Defoe and has been an embarrassing joke, overshadowed only by Lamela.
Townsend has started more games this season than Chadli, but Chadli is now back from injury and has started the last 2 EPL games.
Sigurdsson has started more games this season than Lennon, but Lennon is now back from injury and has started the last 4 EPL games.

So of course he's picked the Soldado, Townsend and Sigurdson, because they're not his first choice players. Dummy.
