I know Ronaldo is close to break the record for Portugal. But who is going to break England's record? And who Argentina's?

HSWHW!!! Legend! Amongst the greatest! Where he belongs.

Messi and Rooney is the answer I guess, funny that most topscorers are still active or just retired, shows you how many more games they play these days.

Rooney probably, but I don't think that Messi is going to break the goal scoring record for Argentina, even if he has improved dramatically playing for his country. He's more of a creator for Argentina than a goal scorer.

On a different note, overtaking Riva shouldn't be that much of a challenge (hell, even Podolski has scored 46 goals for Germany), even if his goal scoring average is impressive. Wonder why no Italian forward managed to overtake him in all these years? Defensive football? That at least has changed under Prandelli.

Well have you ever seen Italy winning with 4-1 or something...they are able to beat Brazil with 1-0. But they do the same with Slovakia or something like that.

...oH wait, actually I did watch Italy win big. Remember Italy-Germany!

1982 was the exception to the rule, for various, well documented reasons. Italy - Germany has always been a close affair. Some of the best matches in football history have been between Italy and Germany, including the 'match of the century' in the 1970 WC. Unfortunately, Italy always had the edge indeed. But our time will come.

I was actually referring to that friendly before your Sommermadchen...forgot about the 1982 final even. Nontheless Italy's biggest win in 7 years is just a 5-0 win against Faroer islands, so there is your answer why their topscorer doesnt have many goals. After that it's a 4-1 against the likes of Germany and San Marino.

And they need HHH as their main striker!

Italy's highest scoring active player is Gilardino with 19 ffs! That record will stand for a while.

The likes of Vieri and Inzaghi were too injury prone to beat the record for Italy. They only played about 50 games each for Italy, They would have needed to play over 70 games in order to get near the record.

I was actually surprised that Del Piero didn't score more for Italy but he finished with only 27.

Well he was usually employed as more a creative number 10 for italy, and alot of his caps are when he came on as a sub for Totti. Also, generally speaking, he was not as good for Italy as he was for Juve.

As much as I like Klose as a player, I sometimes hope that doesn't surpass Gerd Müller's record. That goal scoring ratio alone is worth being there for eternity. Plus, Müller scored the big goals, the truly epic ones.

He's the most underrated German player ever considering the impact he had on the national game, on the emerge of FC Bayern München in particular. Beckenbauer once said that without Gerd Müller, there would be no FC Bayern.

Balotelli could do alright depending on how he matures.
