Over the hill at a WC

Post by Axeslammer on Fri Jun 20, 2014 11:08 am

What we've seen so far (except thrilling matches and cracking goals) are teams that should have rejuvenated a tad to a whole lot more.

Which players have caught our eyes for being past it, yet getting (too much) playtime ?

* Iker
* Xavi
* Sneijder
* Gerrard

....I thought there were a few more, but can't think of them right now Sad

And what are the exceptions, the old players who *are* delivering ?

* Pirlo

Really hope not to have to add Buffon to the first list this afternoon....

I've a bad feeling about him recovering and starting the match

He did *not* impress me in the first match, but to add him would seem a bit premature...

I'd venture to suppose that this has something to do with him not playing that match =D

Sirigu was solid enough in the first match. Buffon has had some dodgy moments in the last couple of years. I would stick with Sirigu.

Lol, not the first time I've mistaken Julio Cesar for Buffon....or the other way around Embarassed

Julio Cesar hasn't impressed me so far, Buffon on the other hand has made less mistakes than I'm used of him  Wink

Rooney: ok at 28 he's not that old, but he's been playing since 16, so almost as long as xavi and gerrard

You can't say age is Gerrard's problem, he wasn't up to much for England when he was in his prime.

Who has for England?

He's still been England's best player for the majority of that time, which just shows how poor everyone else has been.

I was shocked that he was still playing for Mexico but yeah considering he had been playing in a mediocre league for several years (before returning to Mexico) and is 35, he does not look like he lost a step.

I didn't see anyone mention Eto'o but he is done.

Cashley, a solid left back offering nothing going forward. I remember him from games against ..., actually no I don't. I do remember Gerrard being the only England player to do anything of note in Euro2012 for example (one of Pierre's criteria was to have done well for England in the past Wink), even ending up in the UEFA team of the tournament in 2012.

He hasn't been great for England in the way he could be, much like Messi hasn't been great for Argentina Wink, but to say he hasn't had a good big game in 13 years is just plain wrong. Anyway we already had this conversation, so no real need to repeat it.

I'd rather have a solid left back that offers nothing going forward than an invisible CM that see's headlines whenever he approaches the final 3rd.

He had one shot yesterday, how dare he. I know the rest of the England team was amazing in attack and didn't need his help, but still they were losing and he is a pretty good striker of the ball.
